Guys- help me out with some advice. Been looking for a 77 or an 88 to fix up for a couple of years. Just found one locally; tin is fair( hood's been cut, side tin is missing, typical surface rust and paint-fade ), steering wheel is badly cracked with pieces missing, tires are checked with about 20% tread left. Owner has had tractor for a short time via some kind of trade. He did a major tune-up (cap, points, condensor, rotor, plugs and wires ); also replaced starter. He states engine runs fine, but he has seen water in the oil and thinks it might be a bad head gasket ( What about a cracked block or cylinder sleeve? ). Tractor is priced at $1,000.00 obo. I would like advice on what possible problems ( and associated repair costs ) could be involved with a problem like this in the Oliver. Really appreciate your input!

Yours may be the best offer. The only offer. That was not a major tune-up, probably a bit more than enough to get it running. Replaced or renewed? Subtle difference on sarter motor.
If I wanted it real bad I would give him the money. If I only wanted it for what it is worth I would make an offer, a much lower offer. If someone wants it more than you, let them have it along with a potential pile of repairs and money needed for parts. There is always another one somewhere.
From what you say, if he is a dealer, he paid very little for it - making his margin on the sale - and knows the water/oil problem is so obvious (only had it a short while) as he has had to tell you about it. 'Thinks it might be' is a good way of getting out of any legal resposibility. He actually said nothing except that you will find out yourself. Engine perhaps does runs fine, but for how long? Water in the oil may mean nearly shot bearings, crank wear etc. I would also check for signs that the pan has been off recently. He has probably changed the oil (from a thick grey sludgy mess) as part of his major tune-up.
What about the rest of the mechanicals? What repairs might be neede there?
Sorry, but I'm suspicious and I'm not spending your hard earned money, you are. Your decision.
Regards, RAB

RAB -- Thanks for the advice. I was thinking along the same lines; you just confirmed my fears. I don't mind suspicious -- been burned before and don't need to re-learn those lessons. Thanks again!
