I'm going to look at a Oliver 1800 diesel tractor that is for sale. How do I tell if it is a A,B or C series? The tractor is in good running shape but it needs tires not right away but in the next year or two. The guy that has it is asking $2700.00 for it. Is this the going price? A frend has looked and drove the tractor and likes it so I'm going to see it for my self and would like to get some input from guys that know more about this tractor. I was told that it would handle a large round baler. That is what I need it for. Thanks Jeff

The "A" series tractors have what is called the Checkerboard decal on the hood side. If it has power steering, it is the old style with a shaft from the steering wheel to the PS unit. These units can be troublesome and parts are not redily available. The "B" series had further refinements. The "C" series has the metal hoodside placard with the decal. If you are looking for a working tractor I would advise against the "A" series. All three diesel engines use the energy cell injection system and are a little hard starting in cold weather. The 1800 will handle a round baler quite well. Others can fill in the gaps I've left, WB.

Also, another way to tell is by the specification/ model number. Here is a quote from the archives, on the A, B, C numbers, courtesy of B. A. Starr.

"
First two digits of the specification number before the dash, for all of the 1600's (both first and second groups) is 16. 1800 "A" is 18, 1800 "B" is 28, & 1800 "C" is 38. 1900's are 19, 29 & 39 for the "A", "B" & "C".
"

Hope this helps.
