I just finished overhauling a 478 herc. I used 22.5:1 military pistons, installed a new stock turbo, rebuilt the injection pump using a .310 head with the leaf springs tightened completely down, -20 shoes, and shortened the metering valve link the whole way up. The dyno numbers completely blew me away. at 2200 rpm, (stock 2400 no load) it made 370 horse. doublechecked the numbers several times. I'm still dumbfounded.

Wow! That's incredible. What do you think it would run at 3000 r.p.m.? I always thought that the Hercules motor with all that cubic inch could be made into a monster and you've made me a believer. I don't want to ask a stupid question but all of our dynos around here won't read that kind of horse they pretty much top out at 240. M&W dynos. What brand are you using? And how much too build such a motor?

this was a major overhaul because of bearing failure, so it cost quite a bit. you could do a in frame and have the same results. the high compression pistons and sleeves, a good injection pump, and a good turbo (the T04 will not live very long like that) and 400 horse should not be a problem.

What kind of boost are you running? I would have thought that you take a little compression out of it. Did you run the counterballanced crank?

I agree with John.
A lower compression ratio would simply mean more space for combustion air. Boost could be raised a little (to same theoretical compression presssure as at present), I suppose. Anyhow more air means more fuel can be burned, but if your pump is full open..... .

Not sure what kind of boost it was running. If we were running a big charger the lower compression ratio would probably work better, but with the limited air suppy with the stock T04, higher compression seems to work well. I did a in frame on a 2-135 several months ago, we had the injection pump rebuilt previously and it was turned up 15%. should be about 155-160 horse. I put the 22.5's in it and it dynoed at 235. (each of these tractors were on different dyno's) both of these tractors are burning almost perfectly clean under 300 horse. when you get over 300 you start to get a little smoke, but they are definitely not overfueled.

We had a 2150 around here once with a Model 100 pump and a head for IH 400 series engines that was installed by the dealer next door. Preformed like a house-a-fire, but short manifold life. Have you put a pyrometer on it and got any readings?

I did not install a pyrometer, I made one dyno run and then cut it back to 200 horse. they seem to live well at that horsepower.

I've got a 2-135 that's pushing more smoke than usual out the breather pipe. I'm thinking it might be time for a rebuild. Not looking to build a big monster like yours but would like to make improvments and a little more power and long life. Were did you get you parts? Thanks.
