A 310 block will bolt up into a 1650 but there are a few things you have to do to do it. If it is a direct injection motor, has plastic tees on the injectors, it will be a little easier. The things you have to do to change it is to swap the back plate on the engine, change the flywheel off the 283, and the hub out of the flywheel for the PTO shaft. The flywheel and clutch does not fit in the 1650 bell housing. The flywheel only bolts up correctly if it is turned correctly. It can be half off. From there it fits fine. We have at two 1650s that we have put the 310 block into with turbos. The one we pull hot farm classes and the other we use around the shop. They both are the 310 block similar to the 1955 with the large engine oil cooler on the side. There is a common misconception that the 310 motor is junk. We have been rebuilding them for many years and even fixing ones with a hole in the side of them. You just have to know what you are doing. So to answer your question, it can be done. As far as rebild kits, it may be best to go to your local dealer and order it through them. If you do not have a direct injection motor, brass tees on the injectors, replace the vanes and spring in the oil pump when you rebuild it. If you have a direct injection engine, read the following. Do not grind your crank on the 283 or 310 any further than 0.020 on rods or mains. It does not hold up as well. The main failure we have seen is a locked up wrist pin bushing and bearing. Have the rods magnifluxed when you rebush them and get the replacement bolts from the dealer also that has the 12 point head and washers that go underneath. These bolts hold up better. Replace the cam bearings while you are at it and check out the oil pump.
