Head gasket sealant? (1650D) Ring placement?

I will soon be reinstalling the head (with new gasket) on a 1650D direct injection. The manual (I&T) makes no mention of any sealant. Just wondering if anyone uses it, if so what type, or is dry preferred. Also does anyone know correct ring orientation as far as where the gaps should point in relation to the piston? The manual says new rings come with instructions but (shame on me) I'm not replacing them as the head gasket dried up the budget!

Speaking generally, if the gasket is a "Shim Embossed" type (stamped tin) with no coating, (usually blue orr black if it is coated) something like Copper Coat is a good option. If it is a composition type (sandwiched metal and asbestos) if it has no coating (usually gray or blue if it is coated) copper coat works, as does white lithium grease.

If the gasket is coated, and has inked somewhere "No ReTorque", the only thing that might be considered is a tiny bead of high temp silicone around any water passages that do not have bolts close to them to clamp the gasket tight on first firing.

As for ring gaps, stagger them opposite each other (never line up the ring gaps if you do not want to consume a lot of oil.) Usually the gaps for the three piece oil rings get spread about 60 degree apart from each other. referenced from where the center spacer comes together.

As for the ring gaps in relation to the wrist pin, most of the time the gaps align over the wrist pin when there is a preference.

If there is a more specific set instructions, follow those as these are speaking generally.
