1850 DSL LOW OIL PRESSURE

ANY SUGGESTIONS. I AM THIRD OWNER OF 1850 DSL PREVIOUS OWNERS SAY THAT THIS UNIT HAS NEVER HAD OIL PRESSURE ABOVE 25LBS. STILL DOES NOT. CURRENTLY HAVE IT TORN DOWN. IS THERE A WEAK SPOT I SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR? ENGINE HAS 5100 HOURS ON IT. THE TIMING GEARS ARE SHELLED. IS THERE SUCH AN ANIMAL A HIGH CAPICITY OIL PUMP? PLANNING ON A NEW PUMP FOR THIS PERKINS AS LONG AS IT IS IN PIECES ON THE BENCH. ANY THOUGHTS GUYS??? THANKS IN ADVANCE

The 1850 dsl engine had complaints of sudden reduction of oil pressure. In the timing gear area, there are five timing gears. A gear on the crankshaft drives a idler that drives the camshaft and a second idler. The idler gear is mounted on a support that is retained to the crankcase by a stud. The support has a dowel to prevent the support from rotation. The dowel will fail, allowing the support to rotate unscrewing (it turns counter clockwise) the stud, this allows the support to move away from the crankcase opening a lube passage dumping oil. The assembly will not come completely out of place as the stud only unscrews until it hits the timing cover. Remember that a engine is one big oil leak. A oil pump only produces a certain volume of flow, does not create pressure. Pressure is created by resistance to flow. If clearances get too large, resistance to flow is reduced and excessive leakage occurs causing pressure to drop.

Is the crank in or out right now? This might be the ideal time to make up a bearing leak detector and see where the trouble is. Other than that RAB has given you good advice on items to check. Also you did not give an engine number or for that matter a tractor serial number. Early Perkins had a litlle smaller pump than the later ones but I do not recall any oil pressure problems with the small pumps except for one and it had a leaking relief valve. That is why a good test with a leak detector while the engine is on a stand or on the bench is the way to go.

Look at it subjectively; it either has a low reading guage, an out of spec pump, a relief valve problem or oil volume is being lost through an internal leak (bearings or other). There are specifications for all the internal engine possibilities and for the oil pressure checks (temp, rpm, oil viscosity). Find the fault first or you may well be spending money for nothing. Just my 02p worth.
