I put a new injector pump on my 1650 last year and have never been convinced that I got it timed right. I lined up the timing marks on the pump before I took the old one off, then lined them up on the new one when I put the new one on, but I am not all that sure the old one was timed right either. The other day I lined up the timing mark on the flywheel with the pointer in the peephole, then adjusted the pump to line up on that mark and it really ran bad. How do I get this thing timed correctly, or do I need to call in someone who knows what they are doing? Thanks
Pete

When you are turning the flywheel to get the 4* BTDC if you think you have gone too far, dont back up you need to make another complete cycle.

What is the best way to rotate this engine anyhow? I have been doing it by engaging the PTO and turning the stub with a big adjustable wrench

Use a socket (1-1/8 inch ) in the crankshaft pulley. You are making too much work out of this. If you go past, you need to back it up at least a 1/4 turn to take up the backlash in the gears. Do you have a timing window. Did you loosen the 3 nuts that hold the pump to the front flange? Make the final adjustment there. Questions give me an e-mail reply on the hartparroliver.org site.

If it is the one with the energy cell the timing is 4deg.before top dead center.

At the risk of sounding like a complete moron (I am only a partial moron) how do I tell if this one has the energy cell?

If your injectors go into the head below the exhaust manifold and are horizontal, then you have the energy cell setup. Look on the intake manifold side and below the manifold will be six large hex plugs, one for each cyl. Those are the energy cells. The late model 1650 diesel has direct injection that uses pencil type injectors. They go into the head above the manifold at a vertical angle. WB.

Thanks, It sounds like I have the energy cells then. So the pump should be timed at 4 degrees before TDC.

This I&T manual states 2 BTDC for indirect injection (energy cells). All 1650 after S/N 187586-000 and all 1655 have the pencil type injectors and are timed at 4 BTDC.

Hope this helps

What Line. The 1650 has a white tape and you may need to clean it so you can read the degrees. You are using the right process, you just need to get the right number of degrees. If nobody replies with them I will look them up later tonight.

Oh, the only mark I saw was the TDC mark so I timed it to that. No wonder it ran so bad. I'll look for the degree mark and try it again. Thanks

My book says 2 deg.BTDC for energy cells, 4 deg.BTDC for direct injection. Seems to me there was a faint mark on the pump 180 deg. from the real pump mark so if you're not careful the pump could be timed 180 deg. out. Don't know if it would run like that though. Does anyone know how many degrees per inch of flywheel? My flywheel tape is gone and I don't want to pull the flywheel to put the tape on just so I can check the pump timing!
