I've got another 5 gear engine that I'm going thru. I've got 2 crankshafts, both have some grooves. Overall they are pretty close to tolorance, but if they are ground out, they are going to get real small. The tractor is a '37 styled 70 and will be show and play. What do you think of just polishing them? I HAVE to put in rings and sleeves as they were too rusty to save.
Am I talking myself into more problems down the road? Thanx for your time and expertise, Larry

I believe you could also have a shope weld it back up and grind out any grooves. It can get a little costly but just throwing another idea out there.

I am not an expert, but on our 77 I had similar dilema, I decided to do a lot of polishing and smoothing, there were some places that I had to dimple out some rust spots, but I didn't turn the crank down. After 2 years it carries good oil pressure and we haven't any problems, the tractor is used as a stock puller and probably has 100 runs on it. (knock on wood)

When asked about grinding the crank if you do not have the bearings, make sure you can still get them. Some of those undersizes for F & D model Continentals especially mains have been discontinued in the last couple of years. Also are your sleeves rusty on the inside, outside or both? If on the inside you may want to consider a 3.250 bore and have a shop bore the sleeves out, if already there I think (without looking it up) that you can find some 3.313 Continental pistons at good prices. Use a cast ring set. Just some thoughts.
