Started the 70 up and it's blowing oil out the exhaust, leaking out the bottom othe pipe and blowing spatters all over!
This is 2 engines put together; the head from the original tractor with a fresh (2 yr old) valve job. It's an old style head with the wicks in the tappets. I reseated the valves, all looked tight.
Got the block from a friend who said the engine had been o/h a yr or two b4 parking tractor. Pulled the pan (head wasn't included) and everything looked like new, bearings, etc. The plugs are oil coated but don't foul out, good compression, new string wicks and pushrod washers. I can't believe that this much oil is coming from stuck rings. What am I missing? I've run it for about 3 hours with rizalone and put kerosene mixture in the cylinders.Any ideas?

Make sure the oil is able to drain away from the top end. Plugged oil return drains prevent the oil from leaving the head and the oil can build up and be pushed past the valve guides and into the intake/exhaust runners. Also, worn valve guides will "pump" oil into the induction runners

I bet you may have some very stuck rings or even rings installed upside down.

Again, like RAB said: determine if this thing is smoking on one cylindar or all. The plugs will tell you which ones are smoking.

You say it has good compression, but what does the gauge say on a bounce test? You if don't have 125 psi you don't have good compression.

Run these simple checks and then get back to us.

Do you have blue smoke? That would indicate burning oil. If not, it may be leaking down the guides - is the crankcase breather clear?
Was there evidence to support engine condition when put back together - bore wear, scoring etc?
What clearance was there in the guides when you did the valves?
Have you carried out a compression test?
Is the crankcase overfull?
Does this oil come from one cylinder or all?
Makes me wonder why the tractor was stood in the first place....
Get back to us with what you find and good luck.
Regards, RAB
