I am looking to install a herc into an 88...I certainly don't expect it to be as easy as a waukesha but in terms of difficulty, is it a matter of minor alterations or major undertaking?
Thanks....

What size Hurc are you planning to put in there?? I hope you are not going to try and put a 478ci Hurk in the 88, that might me a stretch.

Sorry, but I can't see you having much success in this matter. Even if you do manage to somehow shoehorn it in there, it'll be very hard to steer with all that weight.

That will take tons of work.I do know a guy with a herk in his 88.Its about 270ci don't remember the model. On the clutch end things fit good, but its too long. The radiator sits where the grill should be.There is no sheet metal on the tractor. He's been useing it that way for at least 15 years and says its much better than the oliver engine.

I hope this is for tractor pulling. If so do the rules allow for a custom frame. This would make it a bunch easier. I measured for this once, seems like radiator placement was a major issue. I also think the input shaft would be a weak link to farm with.

WEAK LINK??? How about everything behind the clutch plate with this kind of overkill. I hope you putting in a 478 with a turbo so you can, at least, double the normal output of that engine. Whats the problem guy; you couldn't find a missile that would fit in that frame?

It will hook to a sled and nothing else. Since it may fit at the clutch end ok I am more concerned about the fit of the sheetmetal.

I cant imagine that the sheet metal will fit without being altered with that big engine in there. You would probably have more luck posting on the tractor pulling forum, they would know more about this kind of alteration than we would.

If you have problems with the sheet metal, you can have it altered at a good, reputable body shop. My brother works at one place whwere they had to extend the sheet metal for something like an 8N that had a 1950's something flathead V-8 put in. Haven't seen it finished yet, but the hood looked allright.

To those of you who have offered candid and helpful insight to this situation I appreciate your help. I was looking for an less costly alternative to a 310 to shoehorn in, and was unsure as to the feasibility of the 478, which I'd probably left in near-stock (100 horse or so) form, due to the inherent weakness of a drivetrain that with a stock 478 would encounter with nearly 3 times the horsepower it was originally intended to handle. I just don't relish the idea of coughing up $3K or more for a competitive 310 waukesha "starter kit" when a 478 can be had for half as much, and so led this query. Thanks again for the input folks.

A better solution for farm use might be a perkins or any smaller sized engine. The ability to put just about anything in a Oliver is what makes them different. I know of several that have 292 chevy's mounted in. This would really be the cheapest alternative, if diesel is required I have helped with a 236-4 cyl Perkins and a 3.8 Onan/cummins 6 cylinder, makes for a fairly easy and nice repower. The tub and your imagination really are your only limits. Best of luck whatever you decide.

If your interested I know of a person by the name of Delynn Kale who lives around Ridgewood or Kenton, Ohio who toured several 88's and I think maybe a 1650 he hold's about every trophy known to man in the NTPA 5000# class including Bowling Green Nationals. I would guess that man knows every nut and bolt in an 88. Just a thought.
