Like the others said, there isnt a way to get it out without lifting out the engine. I work at a Case IH dealership, and I personally think its easier to lift an engine out to do a clutch job then it is to split the tractor and going through all the work of re-alligning the halfs when the job is complete.

Larry from MD Had it right. No need to remove the engine without hydrompower or o/u. I have done a 1650 and 1850 both without engine removal. If uou have a O/U or 2 speed start pulling sheet metal.

On a 1650 without hydropower you can change the clutch without removeing the engine.I have done it and changed bearing another.I would think a 1555 could be done allso.Need to remove the long pto shaft then slip off the sprokets and unbolt the houseing and work out the shaft.I have ajusted the clutch by just slideing the houseing back.On my 1650 and 1555 the power steerings lines need to be fourced back and up to make room.

Sorry but you have to take the engine out . I have changed the clutch on my 1850 (which has hydradrive - 2 speed - like your 1555 probably has ) and helped a friend change the clutch on a 1650 with a 2 speed hydradrive . We tried every possible idea to avoid taking engine out of frame and you just cannot do it . An old Oliver mechanic I know says you can put blocks on the tractor frame , turn the engine sideways on the frame and set the engine on top of theblocks so you do not have to let the engine all the way down to the floor . Problem with that is supporting wieght of hydradrive when you unbolt the bell housing . I just set the whole thing down on the floor .

While you have engine out , I would suggest looking at replacing rear engine seal , front and rear seals on hyrdra drive and o rings around plunger/shifter on the hydra drive unit . When I changed the clutch in my 1850 , I did not do this . Big mistake in my opinion . I did not have the clutch replaced and the engine back in the frame for maybe a month and the front seal on the hydradrive unit started leaking automatic transmission fluid (bad ) . Parked the tractor and out of the frame came the engine again to replace this seal . I just went ahead then and replaced the front and rear seals on the engine and the front and rear seals on the hydradrive unit . When I put a new clutch in my 1855 I just replaced all the seals and did not have to worry about it after that.

Nope, there is not enough room to pull the throwout bearing without lifting the engine out. Just go ahead and lift the engine out, pull the three speed out and put the three speed back on the engine before setting it in the tractor.

Clutches on these tractors are easy, I put a clutch in my 1655 one Saturday and had it running and out the door at about 3 pm with a new clutch, with just me working on it. It is a lot easier than splitting the tractor in half like the other green ones.....

Good luck

I did the clutch on a 1550 (same dimensions), and got to the same point you are- trying to find some way to sneak the pieces out without pulling the engine. I don't think there is a way- at least, I never found it. But once you've got it loose, pulling the engine isn't bad- just get the whole arrangement under a hefty beam. Sure a lot easier than splitting. Good luck!
