Went tonight and looked at this rig. Not "quite" as described in the ad or on the phone. Upside - it starts, runs, and moves. Half the battle

Needs a good amount of TLC.

Downside
Paint - shot
Sheet metal - fair to poor and not all there
Rubber - LH fair, needs rubber on RH front/rear
RH tie rod cobbed up and busted loose
Waterpump weep hole constant leak
No seat, frame is shot
Fenders rusted through at the base
Busted Freeze plug, constant leak near starter
Valves sound like they need adjusted
Hyd stuck in up position Hyd fluid milky and no filter under seat
Hyd leaks under where seat should be be - suspect reason for milky fluid
CAT 2 lift arm pin holes welded shut
Remotes not mounted in braket
No muffler or exhaust pipe - old pipe shoved in
Mickey Mouse alternator installation
Tach no workee
Start with a screwdriver
Manual shut off at injector pump - busted cable
Been sitting outdoors for a WHILE, removed some bird/squirrel nests
Lots of wiring disconnected

Upside
It starts right up - no knocks that I could find
Moves in all gears - no whine, bump, thump etc.
(mind you, w/ no rubber on RH side it was SLOW)
Oil looks good
Steady 45 psi oil pressure at idle, about 60 psi at full throttle (stationary)
Radiator water looked good - no oil film, bubbles
No welds on frame, block only CAT 2 pin holes
Rims in good shape
Remote Hyd hoses "energize" when engaged
Row crop front end but underslung - funny geometry
Appears to be nothing that some time and elbow grease shouldn't be able to fix/repair

Other information
Near as I can tell is 1969 vintage. S/N 212473-55, model 4852218.

Direct Drive - over & under; how to test with no RH tires? Seems to shift in and out ok, no odd noise(s)

Who can tell me about the chain coupler? drive. Found that to an interesting item to say the least. What to look for?

Odd geometry on front axle set up

Shows 3000 hrs. on tach/hour meter

Looks like cast rear rims

Rears are 15.5x38 on 14" rim
Fronts did not check

Will post pics on FOTKI.COM tomorrow sometime.
I welcome your comments; educate me :)

I just got a 1755 at a sale today for $3900. Tires were 50% tread, tin was straight and had decent paint. Everything on the tractor seems to work fine and the tach was showing 3800 hours. There are a few minor leaks that need fixed but other than that it seems solid. I thought it was a decent buy, what do you guys think.

I bought my 1967 1850 D (Perkins) from the back row of an implement dealer for $2200. It was running/rolling and had a problem on the shift rail that made it jump out of two gears. (3 and 5 as I remember) As it turned out the owner had it there for a repair estimate and the dealer repair bill was going to be too high. All the tin is there and the fenders are not rusted. It is faded but I figure it was stored inside some of the time. It needs a new seat and new batteries. It will need some work on the tach and speedometer but mechanically it seems to run good. I asked the dealer for the owners name to talk to him about it and they knew I was calling him. The dealer was trying to steal it from him for little or nothing and were they mad when I closed the deal. Anyway they knew what they had as did some other local farmers. After I got it home and they offered to trade me a running tractor for it. Another shade of green without a 3 point on it. Needless to say I did not consider it. They wanted the Perkins I suspect. By the way I wanted it off that lot when I paid for it so when we closed the deal by phone, I drove the tractor off the lot that day. I did not even take time to line up a hauler so I drove it home on the road. I wont admit to how far. I did check with several sheriff departments who said if it has safety lights and an SMV triangle, it would be ok to operate on the roadside. All the lights worked and I drove it half way the first day and the rest a second day. It only jumped out of gear once during those two days. Since getting it home it began to happen more often until it would not stay in any gears. Longer story short, it needed to be split. Found and repaired a broken shift fork and one of the gears had a tooth missing. Total bill for that repair including a complete fluid and every filter change was $1500. It has been worked hard since the repair and I believe was a good one. I think for your $2000 you could start out much better. I am headed back to another dealer this week. Last fall I spotted another 1850 and a 1650 gas in the back row that they took in on trade. Seems I remember the 1650 was ready to go at $3000 or thereabouts and the 1850 had not been checked over. Went missing most of the winter and I figured it was sold. Last Friday I noticed they are both in the selling row. I'll let you know how that one is priced. Of course you are there and your prices are different but your $2000 seems a bit high for the condition and money you will need to add to put it in service. BTW I talked quite a bit with ShepVA about this tractor and the next project intended for it to. I trucked a cab from Iowa for it. Was going to get it on there last year but decided not to rush. I want it done right. I do a fair amount of shopping in the back rows. I noticed the sellers are willing to move on items as long as you dont mind repairing a thing or two. I bought two of mine that way and a third I bought from the owner who had me run it through my shop for two years fixing things up for him. If I knew how to post pics I would. I have some on my camera and in my computer but do not how to attach them to this post. Good luck and keep looking!

Whew!!
To start with, you got $2K in cheap tires...
I think this tractor will be your vocation, not your avocation! Nice fuel cap, give him two bucks and drive another tractor under it!!

Good luck, whatever you decide, Larry NE IL

I know this might be a long drive but it might be worth it. If nothign else it's a good idea one what a 1850 is worth. Link

I see the great northern starter fluid bird was there and left its egg behind? Thought that wouldn't be needed in the south? I think we would be shipping more parts for this one than 550!! Grins from the great white north!

I think I would let that one sit unless I could get it for $500 or less and use as a parts donor. I think you could find something a lot better and save your time and sanity. Send me an email when your coming to Austin again.

Sorry, I was at a meeting all day today and been out of touch a little. Man, looking at those pictures that thing is really rough. You are going to have to go through every thing on that tractor to make sure it works. You are missing the rear end filter, so there is likely water in the rear end, It is leaking oil out of the rockshafts on the hyraulic unit, and you will probably have to go through everything on that hydraulic system to replace all the seals and o-rings.

The fenders look shot with all that rust, you got leaks at the power steering motor out front, and a broken tie rod?? maybe??

That tractor is very close to a parts donor, if you can get it for $500 or so you might try it, but that thing will need a lot of work to get going again. Problem is that thing has been sitting too long, look at the color of the oil that came out of the hydraulic system, it is yellow, that means there is rust already in the system mixing with the oil and eating up the pump and filters, that is not a good sign, and there may already be serious damage to the system. How do you know???

I bet you $5 there is water in the rear end and that is not good. If water is allowed to sit in the rear end long enough it rusts the gears and collars in the transmission and causes gears to lock up, and that is not easy or cheap to fix. I had that happen to one of my tractors at road speed, and that was no fun coming to a fast stop....

I personally feel like you are going to have way more money invested in saving that one then if you bought one in better condition for a little more money. Dont get me wrong, I love saving fence row tractors, but that one has not only been sitting a while but has be pretty heavly abused.

Tell you what, if you save that one you will know everything there is to know about an 1850 when your done :>)

Let me know if I can help ya bud..... .

I would think 500 is plenty and I have most of the parts to fix it.The hydrolic is open to the rain.It does have the late style restrictors. My 1555 is the only one i have with those.

Hey Dave -
It is on the ground next to the good front tire lying in the grass.

The 4 bolts that hold the seat bracket on go right into the hydrolic top. If they are gone then water dirt anything can go into the hydrolic oil.I would think i could fix the hydrolic, but i have some spare parts.

Be careful. Unless you can buy this tractor for under $1000 I would walk away from it. depending on what you find when you get into some of these repairs you are going to have a ton of money wrapped up in this thing when you get done. If you could buy it or less than $1000 you could probably look for an 1850 with a bad motor and use the motor from this tractor. You are going to have several hundred dollars in tires alone invested. Up here in the midwest you can buy a real decent 1850 diesel in good repair for $4000 or sometimes less. Neighbor had an 1850 gas with narrow front end on farm sale last fall. It sold for $1850.00. It was real straight with good rubber and ran well. About the tractor you describe has going for it is a running motor and the fact that it is a late model with the over-under. Do what you want, but I would look for a better machine. I'm afraid you could have a lot of money tied up in this tractor before you are finished.

Steve -
You are echoing my thoughts exactly. Given I am not sure of the hyd. and the need for rubber I am thinking of a low bid. I would like to have functional rig and not a "hanger queen" that never works. We will see what happens over the weekend. Stay tuned.

Lots to work on but lots of potential. The tires I wouldn't worry about, used ones in this size abound. My family has one with the underslung axle. It works better in field work, MHO, I think my dad and uncles liked it so well it is on the 18 and both 16 as well as the 1550 I bought two years ago. I might be able to use it as a pull tractor donor if you don't want it to farm with. Best of luck.

Too funny Shep. You just about described the 1850 I bought awhile back. Mine does start with the key though.
I like that underslung front axle. We have some tight lanes through the woods and that utility front end turns a much tighter radius than our other row crop high arch behemoth.
Let us know how the hydraulic system gets figured out. Milky mess huh? Getting moisture in it somewhere.
Congrats once more.

p.s. Does the harmonic balancer wobble when the engine is running? Just curious.

Doesn't sound too bad. The only thing that would make me nervious is the hydraulics and I'll bet there are fellas here that can help. The sheet metal, lift arms, tie rod, seat and fenders can be obtained from a salvage yard--might have to shop a bit.
Price needs to be right though.
