Just took a shot and purchased a Cockshutt 30 (not running). Former owner advises tractor running fine and then died suddenly. He believes it may be a shear pin problem or something distributor/oil pump related. I'm not familiar with system yet and would like to get up to speed ASAP and make this unit part of my permanent collection. Apparently the oil pump has a gear that drives the distributor. What is the procedure to check this issue out. Any and all comments very welcome. Additonally, the engine had low oil pressure prior to shutting down. The engine is not siezed. If the oil pump failed, would that have an effect on the distributor? Just shooting in the dark at this point and just an at home mechanic. Many Thanks for your assistance. RL

Kieth Hewer,
Thanks for the follow-up. I may be interested in the 30 engine. Is the moter currently running and what kind of oil pressure does it have when hot?. I would hate to pull one engine and replace it with something just as bad. The hydraulics and 3 point hitch on this tractor are in good condition. Are you interested in the set up? If I remove the system, I will need the proper complete seat assembly along with some other pieces. I have lots of early Ford/Fordson parts including a MOM dash. Your best price please. How do you ship to Florida? Thanks, RON

Ron,a 3 point is a very rare option on a 30,keep it if you can as it will dramaticly increase the value of the tractor.

Al,
Thanks for the response. How can I get in touch. I have a Ford only background and this is my first Cockshutt. I do not wish to rediscover the wheel. Tks, Ron

Hi Ron,I guess this board is a good way to comunicate& you get the knowlege of others that know much more than I.I like to think you will fall in love with your shutt. The features for a 40's style tractor are impressive.Yours has the rare 3 point hitch, keep it.You most likey have the common live pto.your hyd system should also be live, driven off the gov. shaft. This all means that everything keeps working when you clutch, making your 30 very useful.
The 153 buda is easy to work on,uses autolite ignition and most engine parts can be had at napa or the likes. The wet sleeve engine is"field serviceable" and can be rebuilt in the tractor or removed without splitting the tractor.A great project tractor

Ron,the advice to turn the engine to see if the rotor turns is were to start. If the rotor turns, troubleshoot the ignition system. If it does not turn start by marking the distributors position to the block then remove it.There is a pin and a key that drives the dist shaft that may be a problem, after that its internal.b.t.w,good oil pressure is only about 20lbs.
Good luck
Al

Take and see if the roter is turning by crancking the engine over if that turns then stop so the points are closed pop the points open with a screw driver to look for spark. If no spark start looking at wires and coil. mine was running great last week and just stopped the ignition switch went out and that was it couple dollars and half hour it was running great

Did you take the distributor cap off, crank the engine and see if the rotor turned?

The ignition switch could be the problem. They have an adjustable generator. I found that my generator was putting out to many amps and the switch wasn't able to take it. Cut voltage output and no more problems.

This is true, that is why 12 volt systems have 6 volts at the points, however he was talking about a pin being sheared in the drive. To answer that part of his question we need to determine if the distributor is indeed turning then we can work on the spark problem

Your point about 6 volts at the points on 12 volt systems. The only reason for this is for better cold starting - 12 volts at the points (just when cranking) through a 6 volt coil.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the follow-ups. Greatly appreciated.
The tractor was delievered earlier this evening.
My expertise has been with Fords but, I always had a weakness for the Cockshutt styling. Certainly have a lot to learn. Should be like starting all over again. The serial number IDs the tractor as a 1953. I'll follow up shortly on all your suggestions. The engine looks as if it was replaced. There is no ID tag as far as I can determine and the color dosen't match the rest of the tractor. Blue is an odd color for Cockshutt. Were these engines interchangable with other makes? It may turn out that the engine is junk. May have to exchange it for something more original if I can find one. For restoration purposes, would be interested in disgarding the rear wheel weights and possibly the complete three point hydraulic system, (suppose to work great). All too heavy for my trailer. Any of you guys from the South as in Florida? I'd appreciate a referal to somene who knows Cockshutts down here. They're really rare in these parts. Thanks, RON
