Bought a 1964 Oliver 550 several weeks ago and just received an operators manual over the weekend. It says to use a 10w-30 or 5w-20 oil in the transmission, final drive and hydraulic systems with a 102 082-A oil additive. I called the local Oliver/White dealer today about this additive. He doesn't have it and does not think it's available anymore. Question is, would it be ok to use something like a Hy-tran oil in all 3 areas? Also, does the transmission and final drive fill at the same location? The manual is a very poor reproduction and I can't tell. Thanks

I'm looking for a manual for my 550 industrial, and wondering where you got yours. I noticed you were not happy with its quality, and wanted to avoid that source.

chuck, i just went thru the same thing, the guy behind the parts counter called Mobil, they cross referenced it and said the additive made the 10-30 thicker and to use 80-90 weight. straight 10-30 or Hy-Tran would burn up ur transmision. i have a 770 and the filler for the trans and final drive is one filler just forward of gear shift lever. there are 2 drain plugs , one for final drive and one for trans. pull both as the final drive has a small resevore of fluid also. i flushed mine with diesal as the manual called for.

Chuck as I recall the 550 Factory manuel says that you should use either Type 55 Oliver hydraulic oil or a 10wt nondetergent oil. The fill port for the hydraulics is found just in front of the seat and is about 2 inches in diameter with a dipstick mounted to it. The transmission final drive uses 80-90wt oil with the fill port found just a few inchs from the dashboard cowling. There is a check plug to check the transmission level just beside your left foot as you are sitting in the seat. I hope this helps you and Good Luck. Shadetree
