I buy and sell Ford N's. A fella about 40 miles and a few towns down the road offers me a Oliver 550 with a loader and back hoe attachments. The tractor runs a weak "OK", but the hydraulics to the loader is very weak. The back hoe moves up and down...back and forth, but leaks at all connectons and then some. The two rear tires left long ago. He wants $1000.00 as is, where is. I know nothing about Olivers. Please advise. Thanks!

Un popular to say, but buy it and part it out. You may get triple your money back. Backhoe: 1000. Loader: 800. Tractor: ?
I know I'd love to pick up a backhoe for mine even if it needs work.

Well if you have the money I know I'd jump on it so fast that all you would do is see a blure. You could probably sell just that back hoe off it and make back your money or very close to it.

Oliver 550; Born of good stock, Hart-Parr tractors
for $1000 add it to your collection. If you don't have the time to fix it right off thats OK. I think you can cover your purchase price and then some in the used tractor market. Fun to fix. Good luck.

Its a great buy at $1000, but I think I'd check the compression if is runs "weak"- rebuilds get expensive. Old hydraulic hoses always leak, and aren't too expensive to replace. If its running hydraulics from the tractor pump, you need a front pump anyhow, to pump enough juice to make it faster than a glacier. I'd snap it up.

Just as Frank said for $1000 you can't really go wrong. One of the best utility tractors of their time. Also check your email for an article with some additional information on the 550.

You can't go wrong for $1000. You can post the tractor on this classified forum and get a great amount of interest. If you are located in the south I will be interested.

Frank -
Where in the south are you located? I am in FL and would love to see that 550 Special in person.

Hey Shep,

I am located in the western part of TN in Jackson. I live just off of I40. If you get this way be sure to visit since I love to talk Olivers and I will even let you drive the 550 Special.
