I recently bought a '56 Oliver OC-3 from a tractor buff in Watsonville, CA. Problem is tractor loads up and dies when under a load. Although it may be starving out too.

I replaced the Marvel Schebler carb with a new Zenith off this web-site. Runs slightly better now but still rough and wants to die when tractor works on a hill.

I checked the gas tank for debris and it is clean.

can anyone help?

After having this problem with my OC-3 twice in the last 6 years, when it starts acting up I know it's time for another coil in the mag... I still don't know why it goes through coils the way it does, but I have been through the fuel sytem completely, the mag has been rebuilt, and it still eats them! Be sure you don't have resistor type plug wires as these can affect coil life also and check for oil inside the magneto. When my coil goes out, it will make good spark on my spark tester, but won't fire the plug in the engine under load. The only way to know for sure is to substitue a known good coil and try it. I hope this helps, and thanks for letting me let off a little steam ( those coils aren't cheap, and I get about 50 hours out of one):(

The marvel carb is a good carb for that tractor, you can get a carb kit from Zimmermans 717-738-2573.

Have you checked the float level? I think an OC-3 has a plug in the intake to install a fitting and use a vacuum gauge. if not I would put one in it. A vacuum gauge is one of the best troubleshooting tools for a gas engine there is for the money.

After you check the tank outlet and lines for blockage the next thing is to see if you are sucking to much are in the manifold. Maybe even where the carb was installed.

The other area to look at is the governer. My WD45 did the same thing and after checking all air, fuel and spark I finally rebuilt the govener it ran like a top. I dont know anything specific about OC-3s so if it doesnt have one...never mind. Good Luck

I have seen those act like that when the coils in the mag get weak. You might have to get that checked and/or rebuilt, if everything else checks out OK.
