So I know that the 6bt Cummins seems to be the popular engine conversion into olivers due to their avalibility. Has anyone done a conversion with a 4bt before? I have seen pics, but I have never talked to anyone who has done it.

I'm currently working on a 1950 GM and I have been taking carefull measurements of the bell housing/engine/frame and here are my thoughts: If I were to aquire a tub from a previously 1900/1950 and the adapter bell housing, I believe the 4bt would slip right in. Most industrial 4B's come with a SAE #3 bell housing which will mate directly to the hydrapower(all standardized by SAE). The 4B has the same mounting dimensions as the 4-53 detroit(again standardized) so there should be no issues there.

Of course I've thought maybe I should just stick a detroit in instead of a Cummins, but I can get a brand new 4BT for $4000 and that comes with a 10,000 hr. warrentee plus the fuel consumption and noise would be much less.

Any thoughts on doing this? Anyone done it before? I think it might be a slightly(again, only speculation) cleaner conversion than with a 6BT into the original frame. The 4bt should be more suited for the power that these tractors were originally rated at as well.

The 4BT will work just fine, but make sure that you use one with the crankcase-mounted engine balancer. If you rigid-mount a non-balanced engine, you are in for trouble. I repowered about four dozen tractors during the 1990's under the business name of Altura Truck & Tractor. The other thing you might want to consider is installing a turbocharged 4-53 Detroit with an air silencer. It will be quieter, and still remain closer to the original engine, if that is a concern of yours. Either way, it is a nice tractor. Best regards!

Merlin,

If you don't mind me sking, where do you find a crankcase mounted balancer for the 4bt? Is it expensive? Would you email me the info?

Good point about the balancer. I assumed they all came with one, but now that you point that out, I bet the delivery truck version does not come with it. Thanks.

A while back I put a 4bt in a white 2-70, it made for a good conversion . it was a white american 60 engine that I added a turbo to and had the pump turned up to 80 specs, made 95 hp. I have talked to guys making 150 hp with the 4bt's. A 6bt does make for a nicer conversion, but if you have good connections on a 4bt and it suits you, It is not a bad idea.

150 HP out of a 4bt? Wow! I suppose it can easily be done figguring the new dodge ram cummins is turned up to 600 ft-lbs and 325 hp.

I guess the HP thing is where I am stuck. I really want to only repower so that the tractor is putting out no more than it did originlly. Ideally, I want to do it to a 1955 so I would need 108 pto HP. I'm assuming a worse case senerio of ~85% drive train efficency therefore I need about 125 hp out of the engine. The 4bt is rated at that (turbo & intercooled) but cummins states that is "intermittent." I'm not certain what that truly means. My next step is to discuss this with my cummins rep.

I have put a 6Bt in a 1855 not bad conversion at all. I am just about done putting a 4BT in an 1850. I am building the motor to the 150hp area and see what it does. Motor will be intercooled and aftercooled. Let me know where you can get a new 4BT for $4000 and I might be interested as I am getting a 1955 with a knock in motor. Thanks, Marc

Do you think you could send that 1955 my way????? ? If it has the cat. III 3pth I would love to have it.

I would be very interested to see some pictures of your 1850 if you wouldn't mind sending them my way.

Go to dieselenginetrader.com and search around for 4 cylinder Cummins'. There are a couple of new and reman engines in the $4-4.5K range.

Sorry the 1955 better make to my place and stay. But the dealer is being a pain the ***. I can get some pics of the 1850 when she is all finshed up. I have taken some along the way and can get them to you as well. I put the air cleaner under the hood on front of the radiator. moved the radiator back, made different front side panels to try and make it look original. Should look ok but any Oliver guy will notice. Marc
