Can anyone tell me what the Length is of a 540 and a 1000 PTO shaft. I have a duel speed PTO on my 1800C and have been told that if I shorten the 540 shaft I can then use it at both 540 and 1000 speeds. How much would I need to remove from the 540 shaft to make the PTO assembly think that it has a 1000 shaft installed?

The 1000 rpm shaft is 1" shorter than a 540. WB.

Hmmmm I thought they were the same length. I will have to check mine and see.

Why would one be shorter WB????

Shep, there is a plunger inside that the shaft pushes against. It keeps you from shifting to 1000 RPM with the 540 in place. I wasn't sure what the difference was so I pulled the one out of that 1955 I just got and compared it to the 1000 I have for my other 1955. The 540 was 4 1/2" from the bearing to the end and the 1000 was 3 1/2". I know that the one from the 55 series will interchange with a 50 series because I had to use it before. WB.

Ok, that makes sence, I thought you could not shift the unit with either pto shaft in the tractor, never tried it though.

You can pull the 540 shaft out, shift the unit and put the 540 back in and it will be in 1000 speed, I have done that before.

Learn something every day....

Thanks a lot.
BTW I found that if I remove the shaft and then shift from 540 to 1000 I can reinstall the 540 shaft and it will run at 1000 RPM. I use it that way with my snow blower.

Just wondering, the 1000 RPM balers I've seen required a different spline at the PTO shaft yoke. A fine 21 spline set up. My book indicates a second shaft assembly for 1000 RPM operations. There are several part numbers for this 21 spline shaft depending on serial number. Now I have a 1850 but I think this is a standard. PK

Yes, you are correct, when you use a 1000 RPM machine they have a fine spline shaft. You can change the PTO unit to 540 or 1000 RPM and use either shaft, but it has to hook to the impliment.

So if you buy a bush hog, baler, or anything else that requires 1000 RPM PTO you have to change the speed of the PTO unit and change the shaft. Its a pretty standard shaft, you can still get it from AgCo for about $100 with the bearing.

Good luck

The shafts that I use on the 50 and 55 series tractors are both the same length. I am not sure if the 1800's are the same but on my 1850 you simply pull the shaft out, slide the shifter on the lower right corner of the PTO unit and then put the shaft back in. There will be a retaining bolt on the under side of the PTO unit on the lower right that holds the slide, you loosen that and put a bolt in the slider and pull out or push in to change the speed while the shaft is out.

There is a safety device in the back of the PTO unit that keeps the unit from being able to shift speeds while the stub shaft is in the PTO unit, that is why you have to take the shaft out before changing speeds. If you were to make the shaft shorter you eliminate that safety feature and the unit could possibly shift gears while it is under power and would likely distroy the PTO unit gears.

That is how the 1850 and up duel speed units work, I would assume that is how the 1800's were, but you know what happens when you assume :>)

Good luck

My 1800-c works the same.
