I stumbled onto a 1655 gas for sale about 120 miles away. Was miserable weather yesterday: 25^, windy, few inches of thick snow on the ground. Went to look at it anyway. It was not quite a basket case. Don't know what to offer for it. The owner inherited it and knows little about tractors or their value. So could be a barrier there. First thing I checked the fluids. Hydraulic didn't show on the stick. Engine oil was 1 Qt. over full, VERY black, and thin. Drained 1/2 pt oil into clear plastin jar; no antifreeze in it. OIl filter had 5-22-97 scratched on top. It had been started the day before. I'm sure they had a time with that. Gas tank had been near empty for who knows how long. Setlement bowel was still full of ice. Choke cable didn't work. It cranked over quite fast. I finaly got it started with someone holding the choke closed. Drained lots of water from bottom of carburator float bowel. Let it warm up 15 min. There was a small oil leak at the front of the block just below the oil pump. It ran good; No missing. The clutch engaged right at the bottom. All 6 forward amd 2 reverse gears worked. On the hydraul shift High and direct worked; Low did not. PTO worked. 3PT lift worked. Brakes engaged right at bottom; Seemed to hold( hard to really tell because of snow). In neutral at full engine RPM I could feel a small amount of vibration. Is this enough information to determine the value of this tractor? I would like to make a reasonable offer and give it the adjustments, maintainence, tune-up, and minor repairs that are obvious. Then major repairs or take my lumps and part it out as it became necessary. Any opinions? About the tractor or my sanity? Thanks, Nobe

1973 COCKSHUTT 1655(OLIVER); 6 CYL, 265CID GAS, XMSN 18F-6R, 70 HP, 7023 LBS, LO 4160, MID 5950, HI 7140 PER AVAIL GUIDE. CHECK SEVERAL SITES AS I THINK SOME OF THESE EARLY TRANNY DESIGNS HAD MORE THAN ENUF PROBLEMS. IF YOU CAN SNAG ALL THE NEEDED PARTS, HAVE PLENTY OF TIME FOR FIXIN' AND ENJOY GOING DEEP INTO TRANNY LAND MAYBE YOU COULD MAKE A LOW BALL AND/OR FAIR OFFER.

This may give you some ideas about it a dealer close to me has 2 1650s choice for $4500 one has new paint and runs out well the other looks a little rough but is also pretty good with 50-75% on the rears. Just figured I let you know maybe give you an idea of value of the one your looking at

I've seen a few Olivers for sale around here, but no 1650 or 1655 gasers. I'm thinking of offering no more that $1500 for this one. Too many doubts about it. Will have to check it out again in better weather before I would even offer that much. Really prefer a S-55 or 550 anyway.

I'd offer $1000 and then see where it goes you can always go up but its hard to go back down. You sort of sound like me I want a super 88 or something oliver with at least 60HP but so far not finding anything that I can trade for or is cheap enough for me at this time

On the Hydraul Shift the fluid was at the full mark and looked good. I didn't see any leaks at the front or rear of the unit. Not sure if it was direct or low that out. Think it was low because there wasn't much speed change between shifts.
Not as much as on ny 1600.

Serial no. was 238---, a '73 model. Rear tires were FIrestone Field&Road, 16.9X34 and about 50/60%. Front tires were near bald, old and dry rotted. Outside turnbuckle screw on top link was welded to center adj. part. There were 4 hyrdaulic remotes, all leaking, which accounts for the low hydraulic fluid. The tractor was (said) to have had major engine work with few hours on it since. That seems odd/doubtfull with the date on the oil filter. The block had good paint on it but the head was completely bare of any paint. Any opinions/advice?
Thanks, Nobe

I agree with Old, a thousand sounds about a good place to start. Even if it doesn't pan out, you could problably sell parts and get your money back. Good luck.
