Let me start by saying I know little about Farming and less about being a mechanic. But I've recently started helping my Mother take care of her few cows after my Stepfather passed away and as luck would have it I've been blessed by using a Oliver 1450. I could write a book on my negative experiences I've had with this "marvel of engineering from Italy" in the short time I have been helping Mom. Luckily all I use it for is putting out hay and bush hogging but it is still a real test of my patience.

I do have a question. When starting the Oliver in cold weather(which is quite a choir)it smokes blue smoke heavily. It does improve after about 45 minutes. Don't belive it is oil smoke cause it uses no oil, assume it is some of fuel smoke. Coolant is O.K. as well. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!

my sister's 1355 (next size down)has the same problem, it loads up on the fuel cold, never seems to clean out unless being worked. SUggestions- carboard 1/2 hte radiator to help warm up. Next year replace the thermostat. If it smokes in the summer too (like hers does) think injectors.

A hard working tractor but the operator station seems cramped after life on a 770.

Are you or is your sister running the fuel shut off in the retard or start position?

Nope. That's why I'm thinking injectors.

It gets lot of idle time dragging logs and hay bales. We also cut rake and bale hay with it. Very little heavy tillage work. Likes to smoke during the just puttering around. Works like a beast when asked to, especially with new tires. Have to put a lot of weight on the front to run our 3-16 mounted plow but it's happy to work it once set up. Sure like the diff lock in the muck and clay too.

First of all do you have block heater? Next the biggest problem we had starting them was getting them to turn over good. Does it warm up to operating temperature in a timely mammer? If not your smoke could be caused by incomplete fuel combustion because the tractor is not operating at the correct temperature. We only sold three of them and two are still being used and I do not know about the third one as the owner passed away. But send me a reply on www.oliverhartparr.org. I also though they were a decent tractor, but you just like the rest you need to have it in shape.

I own one of those two 1450's. It starts well as long as the batteries are in good shape. Several years back I had the starter rebuilt and replaced all of the cables. That made a BIG difference on how it started. My biggest problem with it is the cluch. Sometimes it barely will move its self and other times it will dig holes with both tires when pushing with the loader.
