I am restoring a 550 diesel, 1967, and want to change it to 12 volt neg. ground. I purchased new guages, and they came with instructions to change to neg. ground. My question is, isnt the generator 6 volt? switching the wiring and voltage regulator is no big job, but will it charge a 12 volt battery? Also, will it affect the glow plugs, if you switch them to a pos. lead? I am just looking for some input from someone who has done one already. thanks for your time

All 550 tractors are 12 volt, positive ground. This negative ground thing came when alternators came. I am wondering why the gauges say switch to negative ground. What gauges did you purchase? Ammeters are no problem, just switch the wires from post to post.

I purchased the guages at the local White/Agco dealer, supposedly they are the updated replacements to the older ones. The instructions are fairly simple, just to change the voltage regulator and reverse the polarity of the generator. As long as everything else will work ok, ill go ahead and do it.
