Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem on my Oliver 1600? Any time the air temp drops below 30 degrees the neck on the carb turns white and the tractor starts missing. The colder the temp-the more it ices up.

Lee , Dump/mix a bottle of (isopropal) gas line antifreeze in with the gas , and forget about having that problem. Make shure you get the gas line antifreeze wich contains isopropal. We have been doing this for years , with all our up-draft tractor carbs. Useing isopropal , we run tractors in wheather well below "0" degrees , with wind chills reaching minus 25&30 degrees. No Problems. Yes , it will cost you an extra 99 cents every time you fill the tank , but it's so easy and simple. Also , you won't have to empty your carb every time your not useing the tractor. Should you happen to have water in the carb bowl , and no gas line antifreeze. Ice can form , crushing the float. This happened to me , one year ago last fall. The temp dropped before I started useing isopropal for the winter. Or , you can fool around trying to direct and hold hot air around the carb. I choose isopropal. Dump a bottle in the gas tank , and forget it.

Isopropyl -- Thanks Scott for the tip. When I cleaned out the fuel bowl I had little ice balls in it. I drained the carb and added the Isopropyl and my Oliver started purring like a cat with no sign of frost on the neck. Thanks again!!

Lee & John: The information is on Service Bulletin # 430 042 dated 6-25-65. I might add to my comments posted earlier, this condition always happend under light loads when the carb butterfly was restricting air/fuel flow.

The first production of the 1600 gas tractors had a smaller air inlet system including the carburator and intake manifold. The smaller passages caused low pressure and higher speed air/fuel mixture movement. This caused the mainifold to get below freezing temperatures. During temperatures just above and below freezing and high humidity, the moisture in the air would change from vapor to liquid and freeze in the intake manifold above the carb as you describe. The frozen water could reatrict the passage to where the engine would hardly run. There are a couple of solutions. The second production (S/N 137 612 and later W/ 3 5/8" piston from the factory) 1600's had larger diameter air inlet system. Use of the later inlet manifold would most generally solve the problem. There was also a "field Package" made available that included a replacement inlet tube to the air cleaner. It also had a pipe that pulled air from around the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner inlet pipe. The air cleaner pipe had a air director baffle to pull air from around the exhaust in cold weather and through the normal way in hot weather. The baffle was controlled by a cable mounted in the dash.

This is going to take me a day or two to remember all this stuff. This goes back 40 years! There was even a kit, where you had a choke cable that controlled something. I think it took warm air from around the exhaust pipe and let it flow down on the intake manifold. Then we you did not need the air you pushed the cable back in. Another thing the problem for us was worse on the small bore engines than on the 64 models. One theory on that was the larger air cleaner on the later engines blocked some of the cold air that the fan blew on the carburetor. We also made a couple of like 1/8 inch thick gaskets out of some kind of aluminum and used that instead of the regular manifold to carburetor gaskets. Give me a day or so and if no one comes us with the bulletin and the instruction sheet with the fix I will need to dig through some of my antique bulletins.Send me a U2U on the HPOCA page with an address and when I find it I will send you a copy
