Hi, there's an old Oliver OC-46 loader on the rear of my pal's recreational property. From a photo he sent me, it looks as though the machine hasn't run in years, but I think it's complete- as far as I can tell from the photo he sent me.

I'd like to get this machine running to see if it can be used for some light clean-up work on my own lot. Might sound silly but I don't know yet if it has a gas or diesel engine- I didn't think to ask about that...
My question is, if the engine turns out to be non-servicable, is there a suitable transplant that can easily be dropped in the chassis to run the machine until the original engine can be repaired? Thanks, JM

A friend of mine had an OC 4 loader which was the early model. It had a 4 cyl gas Hercules and a short drive shaft between the clutch housing and the transmission. If the OC 46 is the same then an engine swap would not be that dificult.

Thanks- I've found a good Mercedes 4 cylinder diesel engine from a 190D car, it's currently behind an auto transmission in the car. I don't have a l.o.a. for a 4 cyl. Hercules engine to compare to the Mercedes engine and I'm also unsure if the flywheel and torque issues can easily be resolved if the Merc. engine will even fit in the OC-46 frame without moving anything else around.
As I haven't had the chance to yet to closely examine and measure the 4 cyl Hercules engine in my pal's abandoned OC-46 loader, I can't establish yet if this swap is even feasible from the point of view of available space and component match.
Can anyone give me some overall dimensions of a typical 4 cyl. Hercules engine in an OC-4 or46 so that I can decide if this engine swap even has a chance please? Thanks to one and all, John Morgan.

Oops, in my haste to post the above comments, I neglected to take into account the fact that the original engine in the OC-46 is just as likely to be a 3 cylinder engine- I just don't know yet as I haven't seen the thing myself so far and my pal can't tell me as he's away for a while.
Anyhow, I'm looking for the l.o.a. of a 3 cylinder Hercules engine as well as a 4 cylinder version. Thanks to all. JM

The 3 cyl Hercules is 130 cu in and is rated about 28 Hp at 1700 RPM, that would be about 150 lb-ft of torque. You would want and engine that would give you about the same torque at the same speed. An Engine from a car may not have the low speed torque you need!
