Boy am I confused. After searching the archives I have come to the conclusion that only the very late 770s came with the checkerboard grille and flatop fenders. Were they an option on the 880? I have never seen an 880 with flat top fenders. Is this because of the introduction of the 1600? I assume the checkerboard fit the 880. I appreciate any comments that anyone has to offer.

The fiber glass grill on the 770 started with the beginning of January, 1964 production. Flat top fenders started at the same time. The 770 stayed in production through 1967. The 880 was not factory produced with either the fiber glass grill or flat top fenders. The 1600 was the same horsepower class as the 880, thus the 880 was discontinued as the 1600 had more features. A small number of 1600's were built in 62 & large numbers in 1963. Very few (less than 20) 880's were built in 63. The Checkerboard that is referred to in the 1800 / 1900 series is the decal that was on the hood sides of the "A" series. Beginning with the "B" series, the Placard (came from Cockshutt) was attached to the hood sides, replacing the decal, throttle remained on the steering column. Beginning with the "C" series, tilt steering was added and the throttle was moved to the side of the dash. That is the easy way to distinguish the models. There are numerous other changes to the tractors in additon to those mentioned.

MR. Star thank you very much. Once again you know just what I was wondering. After reading through the archives anytime I see a response by you I almost always have to read it. Keep up the good work. I know I appreciate and I am sure everyone else here does. I also appreciate the responses by the rest of you. Jake

They built the 770 to 1967 the late ones had the plastic grills and flate tops.Last 880 was 63, like you say sheet metal will interchange.

Without looking it up , The "770" , and "880" started out with the bar grill. About 1963 , the "880" was discontinued. The "770" went on in production , useing the checkerboard grill. Both old and new "770" sheet metal will interchange. Again , without looking it up , I don't think the "770" and "880" grills are interchangable. Now , I have a nice picture of an Oliver "880" in "My Pictures" , which I had saved off this site. It has flat top fenders. I'm shure they are not original , but they do look good on the "880". If you would like to see it , send me your e-mail address. Mine is: [email protected]. It looks so good , I considered putting flat top fenders on my "770" , which has the older sheet metal. In my opinion , the flat top fenders look better with the old 770/880 sheet metal , than it does with the newer sheet metal. Problem is , my "770" is all original , and in great shape. For this reason only , I will stick with what I have.

According to what Mr. Lynch told me at the Oliver show in Penfield this summer, the side covers, front and rear are the same size and will interchange between the 88, the Super 88, 770, and 880. The grills are interchangable between like models.

I have a question: According to what Larry Hedgpeth told me, when you say "checker board grill" you are talking about a very early 1800 (I think). I take it we are talking about "egg crate" type grills here. Am I right or wrong?

Did the 1600 ever have the checkerboard decals and the fancy checkerboard embelm as the grill insert?

The 1600 was introduced with the Placard on the hood sides and the Keystone emblem in the upper center of the grill.
