I would like to lose another 300 lbs on our 1950 Oliver 77, right now we are at 3400# with out the driver. So far we have: Pressed steel rims front(14") and back (15.5" x 38"), removed belt pulley, removed mechanical lift, homemade seat, homemade gas tank, homemade hitch, homemade wheelie bars, removable weight brackets, all the tin work is still in place (fenders, side covers etc my choice)and the PTO is installed (club rules). If you have any suggestions, please give an estimate on what the weight reduction would be.

Switching to a 66 tricycle front end should save you 60-80 pounds.

Look at adapting 6 bolt trailer axle hubs to the front end. They are a lot lighter than the factory cast six bolt hubs.

Replace the solid rods in the steering with aluminum or high strength tubing. Find someone to cast the rear pto clutch cover out of aluminum.

A stripped and machined hydraulic base with an aluminum cover plate will be lighter than the factory cast cover for the transmission.

Switch form a generator to an alternator. It will be lighter and you can add a cutout switch to save a little power while pulling.

Hope these help,
A.P.

I have heard people talk about the 66 front end, what does it take to make it fit the 77? I am not sure how to adapt trailer hubs to the front spindles any suggestions? We have a small ND alternator, and the other suggestions you made are all doable.

I have a friend who did a set of the hubs. I will check with him on the details. It will probably take a few days though.

The 66 front will bolt right on the frame, the mounting pattern is the same.

There were some other good suggestions on the pulling forum. You could always swap the row crop axles, housings and hubs for a set off a 77 standard. The housings are round not hex shaped. They are shorter and the end of the axle is tapered. The hubs are eight bolt, not nine like the row crop. I would imagine this change would save you roughly 100 pounds, maybe a bit more.

The mechanical lift was not a 3 point, it is mounted at your feet underneath the dash and was primarily used with cultivators.

I dont know about 300 pounds. Do you have the pressed steel rocker cover?15-20 You could put the foam in the rear end.20-30 Weld on hubs.40-50 Grind down the frame??? Smaller battery. Small or no alternator. We are haveing the same problem with our 880D. It has S88 sheet metal but has the rearend motor frame and bell housing of the 880. We are at 4500(w/weight brackets and wheelie bars) we just built a seat and got an allumium 3 gal fuel tank and want to loose about 500 and cant seem to figure out to do it for reasonable $$$

We have a small ND alternator, the 77 has the stamped valve cover, about 4 gallons of Hytran in the rearend, a smaller battery is a possibility. I am trying to avoid things that would make it look like a "hotrod", in order to not cause problems with the locals.
