thanks for the tips we tried all of them already
give more history, 1850 originally blew head gasket between 1&2 and 5&6 head and valves rebuilt
when installing push rods discovered 2 bent and 1 wouldn't fit into lifter side cover off found broken lifter, pulled cam relaced lifter and new cam gear since it was broke. lined up all timing marks and tried starting with fuel all bled, still no starting, would run with ether and wd-40 thought maybe 180 out, still won't start. compression check done about 100lbs short, pulled head and pan new rods and rings. still no starting
it was suggested that the pump needed rebuilt.
installed new pump, still no start. a white mechanic called and rechecked timing etc. suggested that pump check again. did that.
flywheel timing marks vague (tdc and 28 stat)
only marks on flywheel pulling hair out need more opinions. PLEASE.....

Several things. When you try to start it with out either does smoke come out of the exhaust pipe? If not for some reason you are not getting fuel to the cylinders or you might be a 180 out of time. Take the exhaust manifold off and see if raw fuel comes out of the cylinders. Was the flywheel removed as it fits more than one way? If it was the timing was done by the marks, but the mark is not the right place.Have you posted this on the Oliver club at www.hartparroliver.org. How was the timing of the pump verified and how was the pump driveshaft timed since there are no marks on those gears. Was the engine turned after the timing marks were lined up since they need like 50 some turns before they all line up again

Had an 1850 diesel do this earlier this year. Seemed like everything was bled and primed but would only fire on ether. Ended up taking a new lift pump to fix. Seems that CAV inj. pump requires a steady amount of fuel pressure to do it's job.

I will have to agree with Rex, We had the same
problem with our 1850. After rebuild it
wuld not start up. You need to check the fuel pressure from the lift pump. As rex said if there
is not enough fuel psi to the main pump it will
not start. Don't quote me but I think It should
be 40-50 psi. RK Ohio

A hand lift pump pressure 4-5 pounds should be fine. Your 40-50psi I think you are thinking of the transfer pump inside the injection pump which should be o.K. since the pump was rebuilt. Nobody makes a diaphram pump that does that pressure. they are not a positive displacement pump.
