I haven't worked on many Olivers, but have always liked driving them because they were so operator-friendly....easy to shift and handle. My neighbor has a nice 1650 which seems to have a clutch problem. The transmission wants to "run-on" after declutching, and is difficult to get into gear; especially the first time that you start up in the morning. What do you think the problem is? Also, what is the correct name for the gearbox that is between the clutch and the chain coupling....the two-speed over-under box? They have always been careful to keep the oil in that two-speed box changed so I doubt if the hollow shafts are sticky inside. Is it the input shaft pilot bearing?

be very careful with the adjustment. just put a new clutch in one. the new clutch came a service bulletin saying to adjust just for release it will have lots of free travel, if you take to much of the free travel away it can over travel the pressure plate and the pivots in the pressure plate can break. the problem you discribed sounds like the pilot bearing is stiff or the splines are worn and the disc is dragging.

I noticed a mention of a "button" clutch in one of the manuals. Is that clutch driven disc one of those which uses pads instead of a full friction surface? Our thanks to each of you for posting responses on this. It gives us a few things to check up on before we begin taking the hood off. I've learned that it's always a good idea to look for the 98-cent solution BEFORE you change the crankshaft.

Button clutches are used in the later 1650 tractors. spring of 1967 if I remember correctly. They had a few problems with the pivot bolt breaking on the early ones. I would guess the most common cause of what you describe is the pilot bearing failed and the cluch shaft can not stop. Except for the early button clutches which used a set of spacers the flywheel is machined for the button clutch while the orgainic facing clutch uses a flat face flywheel

There can be several causes and often you just have to pull it out and find the ptoblem. The bearing is one,one of the ajustment nuts may have loosened or stripped and is letting one side of the plates drage, could be the bearing is wearing through the clutch fingers, could be one of the damper springs is breaking up and the parts are fouling the plates.Try the external ajustment on the rod to the pedal first, but most likly have to pull it out.
