Hi guys, I got enough problums on the farm here that have accumulated over the years to keep me busy asking questions. Todays question is What would cause an 1850 LP gas engine to sieze up while it was just standing idleing? Just prior to it stopping, the head had been off and valves ground, and pulled rear upper pto shaft out to replace o-ring inside to stop the oil from coming out of pto gear case. O-ring was a tight fit when I pushed the shaft back in. Could this put preassure against the thrust bearing in the engine? I took the starter off and can pry engine over but Its definetly not free to turn over. Would that end preassure push against the hyd. pump drive train and seize that? the engine does not rock back and forth like taking up any slop in the drive train. What are your opinions? like to hear them. Thanks Jerry . ps, Sometime I'm going to ask about what a guy should do with an 1855 diesel that the engine is junk in.

I had an 1800B with factory LP. Before you do anything drastic check the fuel excess flow valve to see if it closed for some reason. Close both liquid and vapor valves, open the vapor valve slowly, if you hear a click close valve and apen more slowly, if nothing else is bad it should start. Hope this helps. Delbert

Thanks for thoughts delbert, but me thinks its worse then that. I needed a pry bar to turn engine through starter hole. Last tractor that turned that hard had a main thrust bearing stuck to the crankshaft. Jerry

I dont really think the PTO shaft can wedge the engine like you are thinking. I had a tractor that the pilot bearing broke when I had it apart to work on the three speed and I didnt know it. I put the tractor back togeather and the PTO shaft slid too far forward and knocked the three speed input shaft off and wedged the clutch. That was real cool, the clutch got stuck open and the tractor was running while we were trying to figure out what happened, then all of the sudden it snapped back shut and the tractor took off. Not a good deal.....

This should be easy for you to check, pull the PTO shaft back out and see if you can start the tractor, or move the engine. If the shaft is hard to get in and out, you might want to check your engine alignment, and you may have to shim the engine mounts, that is the problem most of the time.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

PS. Put a Cummins engine in the 1855. I can show you how Jerry.

Shep, Tried to visit Sheps world, but I guess my microsoft rocket can't stetch across the worlds to get to yours. Couldn't access ytmag this morning either. Was out for awhile to haul hay, had to plow trails to get to the bales. Then when the truck was loaded, still got stuck. Had to unload 1/2 the bales and make two trips to deliver the hay instead of one. 1/4 mile from home, hauling my loading tractor, blew front tire out on triple axle trailer. Now gotta fix that too! Shep, I don't think its a case of misalignment, cause I drove the tractor around for about1/2 hour and idled it down and was just walking away when the tractor began to lug down and stopped. I had good oil preasure on the gauge. This engine was running smooth before this happened. Thanks Jerry

I think something happened to the oil preasure while you were not looking. Its not common, but have heard of things like broken oil pump shafts and gear keys.Maybe the intake screen on the pump plugged,or the preasure relief valve stuck open that happened to me.
