I had done some work at a good sized family farm recently. They had many different brand tractors , from 1950's to date. When I asked , why don't you have any olivers , one of the owners quoted "the olivers are clumsy tractors". Then he proceeded to say the controls are clumsy to operate. As we talked , come to find out that he has never owned/operated one. Is he going by hear say? Why would he say such a thing? This farmer doesn't seem to be bias when it comes to tractor brands. Clumsy was all this farmer had to say. And he was strait faced and serious. Seeing I have never owned/operated any of the four didgit tractors , I couldn't understand where he was comming from. My only experiences are the "60" up through the "880". They have never apeared to be clumsy to me. Are the 4 didgit tractors clumsy in any way? Are other brands more user friendly? Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't imagine a clumsy oliver. Like I said , I didn't know. No experience with 4 didgit tractors. One thing I have noticed quite a lot , most people who claim oliver is no good , have never really run oliver. There opinions are all hear say. I've owned /operated many brands. Of the same vintage , in my opinion , oliver always has been the best handling , most user friendly tractor.

Clumsy? My RC WF Cockshutt 1550 & 1850 will turn in a shorter radius than many so-called 'utility' tractors. With their high back Bostrum seats, tilt-telescopic steering, and long wheelbase, they are FAR more comfortable to drive all day than high CG, pitch and roll IH & Case tractors of 15 years later vintage are to drive for half an hour. I had a 986 IH with cab & A/C for a year, but I hated the ride in it so much I still used my 1850 for custom round baling. The 986 sat while the 1850 was used at every opportunity.

the most nimble FWA tractor i have ever dirven is our white american 60. but the olivers are suprisingly nimble - our 1655 and 1955 both FWA. i would definitely NOT call them clumsy. they may be a hair deliberate, but not clumsy. outside of the motor issues, the tractors themsleves are extremely rugged, dependable, and hard to kill. when comparing to a friend's JD 2940 FWA, i would take any of ours over that, and not just b/c it is the wrong color green. it has a funky shift pattern (two levers) and it is pretty nimble, the tractor itself is no where near as rugged and it can get puylled around a lot by a disc mower ona side hill - something a comparable oliver would not have happen. my $.02

Well, I have nearly 1 of nearly every make. I have a Allis 190, IH 706, White 2-135, Case 2470, Case DC, Case Vai, Oliver 1600, 1650, 1750, and an 1800 Wheatland, and I have got to say that the olivers are the nicest driving tractors of the whole group, although the 706 has better brakes and sreering and road speed than the Olivers do, it does not compare to the olivers. I will however admit that the 1800 Wheatland is fairly clumsy. These tractors are big, heavy,w/ no power steering from factory. Overall, I think that Olivers are the best driving and most durable tractors ever built.

Good one Frank! Backing a 4 wheeler anytime is fun, but you can double your fun on a JD B. Especially when your trying to look over your left sholder. I've used most Olivers from 70's thru a 1950T. The only one I had any problem with was a '58 880 diesel wide front. Didn't turn worth a darn, and part of the problem was in the rear end. I've had others too and I don't think any measure up to the ease and comfort of Olivers. That's what I think..... .Larry

I've never thought olivers to be clumsy. The early wide fronts did not turn the shortest but any of the latter ones turn as short if not shorter than any thinge else. Olivers mfwd would turn as short and most of the time shorter than anything else into the 90's. I always considered olivers to be the most nimble nicest to operate tractors in there day. They had tilt telliscope steering side hyd controlls, easy shifting transmissions. in 1970 they came with iso mounted platforms closed center hyd and hyd breaks. My opinion they were the nicest all the way into the mid 70's. But what's nice to me may be very uncomfortable to others.

I have operated Oliver models from the two digit through the four digit and even the HG and I sure didn't find them clumsy. Referring to clumsy try backing a four wheel trailer with a B JD, try mowing bean hay with one of the many tractors without live pto. One of the most uncomfortable tractors that I have operated is the AC WD45 and raking hay with a Farmall C is at turtle pace. All tractors have good and weak points but in my opinion Olivers were far ahead of their time.

My 77 runs and handles better than any of the rest of my 18 tractors.
