First thanks to all thet replied to my first post. I must not have explaned the problem correct so here goes again. The hub that is stuck is the one that goes into the diff housing that that the short pto shaft goes into. There is a plate at the rear of the tractor with the seal that is held on by 4 bolts that has been removed. I also removed the pin in the diff housing that connects the hub to the shaft comeing from the pto clutch. Looking at my book the hub should slide off the shaft. My question is, is it just stuck or am I doing something wrong & how do remove it. Thanks again for the help & advise.

Thanks for all the help, I finally got it apart. I was doing it right I just wasn't forceful enough. I had removed the rear plate with the seal & removed the trans cover then removed the pin but couldn"t Get the hub off the shaft. I ended up making a puller then heating the hub & it finally came off. Thanks again for all the help.

Paul If you have the top off of transmission & the oil drained ! There is a roll pin that connects the Hub to the PTO Shaft. You will need to turn it up so you can drive it out with drift punch. Then the Hub should come off with out any problem ?? Inside this Hub there is a O ring that should be replaced if your in this far, it let's rearend grease leak down the PTO Shaft Splines. Did you get your seal & bearing from AGCO ?? If so don't use that seal [JUNK] take old seal to Autoparts store & have it crossed over so you can get good seal.
Been there done that. The old dust packing seal will proably still work. This will let you move new seal in about 1/8" so your new seal won't be in the old oil seal groove. Just my 2 cents worth.
I just had mine apart & been through the learning curve of repairing OLD Tractor. Every seal in mine leaked!!!!! So if you need any futher information just TYPE HELP !!!!

There is a nut that holds the PTO clutch "spider" hub in place. It can be seen looking towards the back of the tractor once it is split and the PTO clutch plates are removed. The nut requires a long obsolete tool to remove but it is my understanding that with a little ingenuity it can be fabricated. Also, it may be a left-handed thread. Sorry, but I am writing this from work and I am going on memory again.

I can not figure out how you removed the roll pin with the long shaft and hub still in the tractor. Do you have the Hydraulic unit off, therefore exposing the transmission and rearend gears? I replaced the large O ring I think you are referring to but I split the tractor and removed the pto clutch assembly, then the long shaft and hub slide out from the rear enabling me to drive out the roll pin.On my particular unit it was not possible to remove the splined hub by any method including heat.I took it to a machine shop and had it turned down in a lathe until it could be split and removed. This then required the purchase of a new used hub.Put it all back with anti sieze.Good luck.

How much water was in rear end ???
Was it sized with rust ???
I just thought I had problems with all the seals bad from setting for about 7 years. I had some water in bottom of rearend enough that I had to replace Output PTO shaft bearing, real rough.
I would probably have sent mine to salvage yard if PTO shaft had been seized up like that. (Wooo is me)
I just got done replacing front axel Pivot Pin & bushing. It had loader on it & previous owner forgot that there was grease zert on front axel ??

No rust any place else, wouldn't hold much oil let alone water.I think the water crept in along the splines.Seems the seals on all of the 55 and 550 go bad.I've got another 550 now and it leaks some also.Never could understand why some folks leave tractors parked outside.

According to the I&T manual the shaft is removed by removing the cover plate on the underside, turn the PTO hub till the allen screw is visible. Remove the 3/8" screws [should be 2, main and locking] the shaft can then be pulled from the rear with the covers removed. You could not have removed the front pin on the hub its too far inside. Replacing the shaft is a two man job the plates must be held in place while inserting the shaft and make sure that the pocket the set screw is in is lined up, this can be verified by sight or a punch, if not the set screw will seat on a spline and have to be redone. Good luck let us know how it turns out.

Mike again. I remember those set screws. I believe that they are key to getting the shaft out. I also recall that they are special "dog tooth" types as referenced in a repair manual. The dog tooth is a turned down end that comes to a blunt point. Oliver must have learned the hard way that standard set screws did not work.

I agree with most of the above but I somehow can't believe that Oliver designed a part that needed to be destroyed to be repaired/replaced. I think that wear patterns and or crud is your hold up once you get the set screws out.

Far more information can be found in the original Oliver service manuals. Unfortunately, I don't have one. Perhaps on of the guys out there does.

Good Luck!

I have the factory manual, and followed it in the process of replacing all of the seals which it seems are a source of leaks prevalent to the 55 and 550. The tool you mention is a large spanner socket wrench made by Owantana Tool, and no longer available.I was able to borrow one from the Agco dealer I get parts from.Yes there are times when factory parts require the sacrifice of one or the other to separate.I doubt that any manufacturer cares how they come apart after production assembly.I use anti sieze on anything I disassemble unless it would be the cause for parts to work loose.Common sense and the specs in the factory manual dictate where and when. The factory manual from Charles City Museum is pricy 150.00 but well worth it. In my opinion those others are a waste of money.

The tractor does not require splitting and the hub removed. I have 4 of the manuals and they all say the same thing, remove the set screws and it comes out. Posting answers to questions is a real experience.

Jake I think your talking PTO Clutch [Hub]??
Paul is wanting to remove PTO Shaft Output Hub on the rear. That is a roll pin . But the PTO clutch Hub does have a set screw. If you are going to mess with that screw you will proably be spliting it in half ??

Read the damn manual. It doesen't have to be split. No wonder so many tractors go to bone yards.

I did read the manual and that's the reason that I split my 550 & fixed it right. You tell me which book says you can see worn PTO Clutch Linkage, broken PTO Clutch Disks and broken grease tube to PTO Clutch and fix all that through some little inspection plate hole. If ??? you can your good. I'll recomend you highly. That inspection plate is for PTO Clutch Adjustment.
Just my 2 cents worth

Yep I agree, the second or top set screw is staked and was plenty hard to loosen even when tractor was split.
Surprised with all the replies we haven't heard any more from Paul.He must have got it fixed or he's still in the shop trying.
