I have a 550 that has bad splines on the inside of the hub where the short pto shaft goes in. For some reason I cant get the hub off the shaft that comes from the pto clutch. I removed the 1/4 pin but cant get the hub to move. Checked my book & it looks like it should slide off. Am I missing something or is there a secret to getting these off. I read the post every day & know there some oliver experts out there. Thanks in advance for any help & advise.

Paul Are you talking about Hub on the back of tractor ?? PTO output shaft. Or are we talking about PTO Clutch Hub ??? The 1/4 drive pin is inside the Rear End. We can help if were sure which end your working on.

The pin is the only thing holding the shaft in, if the 1 3/8 side is out there is 3" that is corroded and holding it. I,ve seen several like this and is caused by not being removed for years. WD 40 and slide puller also tap it in to break the bond. Doubtful that the splines are damaged. LOL

Misread your question, the PTO hub is held in place by a pin {I&T # 11} the hub has splines in the rear which engage the PTO shaft. Mike is correct that the entire shaft must be removed to get at the pin and O ring.

I think that you are on the right track. I rebuilt mine last year. I do recall having some difficulty getting the works off of the shaft as the hub and shaft splines were packed tight with crud from clutch dust and God knows what. I had to nurse it back and forth to finally break it free. Don't forget to spin off the big adjusting nut that acts to hold the entire assembly in place as you work it off of the shaft (it is prevented from spinning by the 1/4 inch locking pin that must be pushed in to turn the nut). It won't come off in one shot because the clutch engagement arms get in the way and the nut is captured as part of the assembly. Also write to Larry Harsin an Oliver repair expert at>Link

Good>Link luck!
