Since I'm pretty "mechanically challenged", I'm wondering what the cost range and availability might be to have someone do a thorough rebuild of the machine for me? Preferably by some in Wisconsin. Ideally what I would like to find is someone relatively close that could do the mechanical work, while I do the parts searching and perhaps the "grunt" work of cleaning, etc. I'd also like to use it as a learning project at the same time ... any suggestions?

I find it hard to imagine how $4500 worth of work could be found in the little Hercules IX four cylinder engine unless you had it gold plated. I bought a brand new shortblock at an auction last year for $700. I've also come across many good running used engines in the $500 price range. What was done to the engine?

YES $4500 is correct.Dad is not really happy.
I do not want to go into all the details. I
only offer this so no one else ends up in the
same boat. Make sure you know what you are getting and at what price. I'm not saying all the
fault lies with them but they certainlly could have stopped the bleeding short of $4500.00

Condolences are in order, I guess? A completely worn out engine could get (and I stress "could"): 4 pistons and rings at around $300, four cylinders bored at $120, crank regound or spraywelded for $150, rods rebabitted $100, valve job $200, misc. gaskets and seals $75, new front crankshaft pulley $60, waterpump rebuild $50, rebuild carburetor $50, rebuild magneto $60 . . . that comes to $1165 in parts, and I'm figuring high. Don't think I've ever come across and engine that needed all that . . . and besides, pistons can be regrooved and shimmed, valves reground, etc. But figuring what I call "high", there's a $3,335 labor charge for your rebuild. That's over 111 hours with labor at $30 per hour.

Are you correct on that 4500 number?

I've completely gone through a couple of machines, my last being an HG dozer. Paid $700 for the crawler with a nice Anderson inside blade. Converted it to hydraulic tilt, put in an auxially transmission, and went thought all else including turning pins and bushings, rebuilding all the rollers and idlers, the engine, final drives, differential and turning brakes, hydraulics, etc. Wound up with a parts expense of $3000, but that can certainly vary. I find that getting parts is very easy. Much is available new, and there's a lot of used around. Labor involved is a different story. If my time was worth a buck an hour, I'd pay myself and retire. If you can't do the work yourself, I think the cost would be astronomical.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm really looking at just overhauling it, not doing any modifications to it. My abilities would be pretty much basic mechanical and "service" type of work. Ideally what I would like to do is pretty much a "time & materials" type of job which would involve overhauling the engine, carb, transmission if needed and tightening and adjusting everthing. I'm not looking for show quality, just a reliable machine.

Yeah, I understand. I wasn't talking about show-quality anyway. I don't know what your experience is, but . . . fixing up a crawler can be quite different than doing the same to a car. Usually, it's not just a matter of removing and replacing parts. Unless you have a machine that was babied, there are usually stuck or broken bolts all over along with various cracks, oval holes that were once round, etc. Very easy to spend an hour replacing one 30 cent bolt.

Thanks ... I'm tracking (no pun intended) some expertise around here, but I'm going to call Zimmerman's anyway. We'll see where this takes me!

I'd be interested to know any tips or suggestions you might have about these machines.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions. I'm pretty good at scrounging parts. Zimmermans is a great place to deal with, and his prices are reasonable as long as he gets them reasonable. I advise you get the price on any part you order. Many of the parts on the Cletrac are generic and can be bought many places. Many other parts are still being made and sold by AGCO and some engine parts are still available from Hercules. Zimmermans has some parts special made also. I've got a tractor junkyard nearby to me that has a lot of parts HGs and OC3s. The guy has also bought out the inventory of serveral old Oliver dealers and has tons of new-old-stock Cletrac parts.

If your definition of rebuild is a complete overhaul from the undercarriage to the engine you are looking at a money sink hole. I have had an OC4 and an HG rebuilt and it isn't cheap. The parts can be found with difficulty. I recommend calling Landis Zimmerman and discussing the project with him. A crawler is a real undertaking if you do not have experience. Landis can be reached at 717-738-2573.
