I am having problems with my Oliver 1850 Carb. It is a Marvel Schebler. I have gone through it a number of times, and had two mechanics look at it. It will not idle below 1500-1600, pulls good at higher RPM. I have heard replacements are hard to find. Where can I find one? Can I put a different model in it's place, like a zenith?

Providing your can verify it's truly a carb problem, and not a linkage adjustment like Shadetree suggests, the Marvel carb is not hard to clean/rebuild.

I did an 1850 carb a couple years ago. Got the rebuild kit at the local Deere dealer. They were able to cross the Marvel carb number and determine the same carb was used on some early 60's J-D tractors (4020 gas, I think...) Found the carb idle circuit plugged solid with crap, and the accelerating pump diaphragm ruptured (tractor had been sitting for 5+ years with old gas in it). After thoroughly cleaning the carb and replacing the diaphragm/gaskets, the tractor now runs like a clock.

Your problem with the carbarator may not be in the carberator, Years ago I ran into a very similar problem with one also. As it turned out the governor linkage was way out of adjustment and had to be totally readjusted from step all the way through to correct the problem. To determine if it is the govenor just remove the linkage rod between the govenor and the carbartor then wire the carbarator into the idle position and it should idle down nicely. If it does then you will need to get the proper instructions and reset the govenor. Good Luck Shadetee.

Try Central Tractor; I got a rebuilt unit from them a couple of years ago for my 1850; works ok.
