The cranking speed on my 1355 has markedly gotten slower over the past few months. It is making it increasingly difficult to start. Replaced the 4 year old battery with a new one with no improvement. Anyone know were to look next? The starter perhaps?

Just to be on the safe side. Take a voltage reading at the starter while cranking and let us know what you get. What has the outside temperature been and what are you using for engine oil? Thick oil and cooler temperatures do not increase cranking speed or battery output.

Thanks for the tips. Temperature was app 32F but tractor has a block heater, it is also in a garage and usually starts in temperatures below O. Oil is synthetic and was clear and viscous when I last checked a few weeks ago. Will try the voltage test when I next go to my summer home in a few weeks.

Yup, I would guess its the starter. Diesel starters are famous for just getting slower and slower and not really dying.

If your sure the battery is good and all your connections are good, pull the starter and have it checked or replaced.
