on my 77 I had a machine shop fit a automotive front timing cover seal in the front cover on tractor. stopped the leak which was almost a steady stream with a new cork seal.

Did you check the thrust brg. clearances close? I've seen these wore enough which will let the crank move back and forth enough to pull the seal away from the cover.

I was just thinking. I believe most of these tractors have aluminum front covers. If there was a groove wore in the cover were the seal ran I don't think it will seal. It would take replacement or repair.

These can be tricky. Eventually they will 'wear' themselves in, but likely the sealing face on the front timing cover has some minute grooves worn in from the previous seal. The new seal will eventually wear in to seal this, or, the front timing cover sealing face can be lightly sanded or polished smooth when replacing the seal.
