When the clutch is pressed I cannot get the tractor into gear. When I push the clutch down real hard, it makes a heck of a racket. I started the tractor with it in reverse and backed it out of the shed, then tried to stop it. It stopped and I could put it into first gear. Drove it around the yard in first and tried to stop it, but couldn't.

Someone told me there was a hydraulic transmission that probably needed oil. What do you experts think? Throwout bearing? Thanks.

First of all I am trying to determine if you have a gas or diesel and also if it is an early or late model. An old rule of thumb is when you push the petal part way down and you hear a noise it is the throw out bearing. If you push it all the way down especailly if it is an early model with the pilot bushing the bushing is bad or at least dry. If you have the sealed ball bearing type pilot bearing and it ties up which they can do the clutch will not release. If you are realy standing on the linkage and hearing this noise it may be caused by the fork hitting the fingers on the pressure plate. does your standard have a belt pulley housing?

The tractor is a 1950 gas 77 standard. It has a belt pulley. Thanks for your response and hope you can tell me more. If it's dry, can it be greased and where? This is the first Oliver I've had and I am not familar with them. It's a really nice tractor. Thanks. DH

Grease is out. We did oil them. It does not always work but it worked enough of the time we tried it quite a bit. Send me an e-mail address and I send you a photocopy and some instructions.
