I have a 66 that I would like to modify for some limited pulling in div I&II. Did I hear correctly that the crank out of a 550/660 is stronger? Is it worth finding one? Should I track down a head and intake off a 550? I dont want to get into stroking or increasing the bore over the point where I will have to machine the block to accept a bigger sleeve.
Thanks

what size bore do you have now? if it is factory 3.3125. you can only overbore those sleeves to about 3.375 they are very thin in the water area.

I have not taken the engine apart yet, but I think that it still has standard size sleeves for a 66...

Yes, the 550 cranks are stronger, but that is not an issue for the power you'll be making, the biggest advantage is the 550 cranks have a bigger rod journal that youu can offset grind to accept the 66 rods and pick up 1/4 inch of stroke. the 550 cranks are also counterweighted. the biggest bore without boring the block is 3 3/4. stay away from the M&W high domes, they are not what most people make them out to be. a 550 head would help, big valves, porting and polishing would help more. a good camshaft grind, a late 550 intake and TSX-811 carb would work well also.

What are the differences between the 66 head and a 550 head? Is it only the valve sizes? What casting numbers should I look for?

The biggest difference is the valve sizes. The ports were a little different, but not a huge amount. I'm pretty sure the combustion chambers are the same. When working with heads that have the same size combustion chambers, I personally would rather install big valves, port and polish a 66 head rather than spend the money for a 550 head. I think casting numbers are 180402 or 180502.
