I need some help as to where I can tap into the main hydraulics ssystem to power the loader on my 550 Oliver.
The loader is now working ok with the auxillary front mounted pump but it is quite noisy.
The operators manual states that ther is enough capacity to handle the loader and the tractors system is very smooth and quiet.
Can I just hookk up the pressure and return lines and where?? And should ther be a relief valve in this circuit also??

It sounds from your more detailed post that the splined coupling that drives the pump is slipping. I was parts man for a NH/Ford dealer for 7 years till this May (with a Case construction dealer now) and this problem is very common with front mounted pump. Splines get worn and will drive pump with little load, but under load, slip. Pull pump and shaft out, then un-bolt drive adaptor from crank pulley. Take all the drive pieces with you when getting your parts as it's much easier for a parts man to mix-n-match that way.

In a former life time and I still do a little of it, I teach a fundamental mobile hydraulic class. This spline wear is a problem with mobile systems. So now the question be comes do you have a pump with splined shaft or one with key. Also thinking ahead a little bit can you tell us more about your loader hydraulics. Double acting cylinder, Float or power beyond on the valve, what the relief is set at and the list goes onm.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
The shaft that hooks up to the 5gpm pump on the front of the loader is a key drive. The coupling is new and so is the pump mounting bracket. The assembly is set up pretty well in that the squareness and alignment of shaft, coupling and pump is as good as I can get it considering that the shaft is threaded into the engine crankshaft. As assembled it does gyrate a little bit but I think that it is well within the capability of the coupling.
The bucket lift is 2 single acting cylinders, 2in. bore x 30 in. stroke. The bucket dump is actuated by a double acting cyl., Bore and stroke are approx 2 b x 12s.
I don't think that the noise is mechanical, I suspect that it is from the pump when the cylinders are actuated. When the loader is idle and the pump is running it is very quiet even though it is circulating oil thru the open center valve.
When the pump is called on to deliver oil under pressure is when it gets loud and also when the bucket cylinder reaches full stroke and the releif valve opens it is very loud.
I know this explanation is lenghty but I' in need of someone with a little Oliver 55 hyd. knowledge to assist me with trying to splice into the main tractor system which has a 5 gpm pump also. this pump is smooth and quiet whenever I use the 3pt hitch. So I know it is working well. Also could it be that I am using hydraulic oil that is too heavy??

I'm from MI also. I don't know exactly where you are in relation Saginaw, But Damms in Pigeon, or Hofferberts in Bannister.

Looks like I forgot the TRY between the "But" and "Damms". I was going by the "growl", many an N series, NAA, etc. through shop with this problem. If I recall, the correct term was "fretting corosion" wasn't it John. We still've got to meet. Maybe some time this winter we can both use it as an excuse to go to Cabella's?

The loader will work much better with the pump thats on it now.The tractor system will be slow.

Describe the noise. Is it there all the time? What kind of and how large of reservoir are you using now? Where is it mounted? What type of control valve are you using. Yes you need a relief valve. Send me a an e-mail address from a U2U on Oliver-Hartr parr site.

To J schwiebert;
Thanks for the reply I don't know how to answer you other than this way
The oil reservoir is in the loader frame it has about a three gallon capacity. The noise is when One of the valve levers are actuated. The valve is a Cross valve. When the loader is at rest ( not being actuated) there is no noticable noise, and the oil seeems to be circulating thru an open center passage in the valve. When the bucket or lift is actuated it growls kind of loud. The pump is a vickers vane pump that is run off of a shaft that screws into the front end of the crankshaft.

O. K. now for me the fun and challange begin. I probably have another dozen questions for you and a picture is always worth many words. Find me at www.hartparr/oliver.org and send me a U2u
