I have a 1960 Oliver 1800 A series with the 265 gas in it. Tractor ran well prior to redoing alot of things to it over the past year. I am now ready to start it back up and now I have no spark. I have rewired, new coil, points and condenser, wires, plugs, etc. All of it. Wiring by the book. I am lost as I cannot find the cause. Suggestions apprecaited. I am stuck!!

Just had simialr problem on our 165 after the points burnt up. Turned out the + wire from the coil to the condenser/ points under the cap was grounded to the distributor. Only thing I never looked at. Donovan from Wisconsin

Don,

I have been looking for a short. Has to be something small like that. I will check. I have missed a step somewhere. I have never had this trouble before. NASCAR would have fired me by now on this one.

Old,

The tractor turns over well and I have fire on the solinoid. What should I look for on the switch. I have 4 terminals, ACC, SOL, IGN, and I can't remember the other one out of my head. Should there be something I should check for. What was wrong with yours?

Dave, mine would crank just fine but no juice to the coil. We ran a jumper wire from the battery to the coil and it fired right up. I think the switch was a little over $20 from AGCO.oleblu

Old,

I will take a look. The switch is new but you never know. I had 12 volts to the coil on the meter. I am wondering if the new points or shorting out or the new condenser or new coil is trouble. I have done something stupid but I have never come across this before. I will give it a try and see how it does. Thank you for the idea.

Try roughing up the surface of the condenser with some coarse emery paper, especially if it's a Mallory with the gold colored coating.

Yes better contact with the clamp. Got this from a Mallory factory rep after having similar trouble with my 1550 last spring. I'd had the Mallory in it for about five years and after replacing points & cond. it would not fire. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out.

With the old switch, if you turned switch on and if unhooked the wire from the switch to the coil and checked it with a light or voltmeter did you have power? If not, do you power to the switch. If you do switch is bad. If I remember correctly the other terminal is the Battery terminal in other words the power source.

John,

I have all new everything. The old stuff was a mess but it did run. I have 12 volts to the coil according to the meter. The motor turns over strong. I made a new harness. I do this everytime so I know what I have. I could have a set of new points that are shorting out, bad new condenser, new coil bad? This thing has got my goat. I have probably done something stupid but I can't locate that either. I will check the switch like you said. I appreciate the insight. I have none now.
