I am thinking about re-powering a 1950 ford truck. I am thinking of using a 354 perkins hooked to an over/under shift to a 5 spd tranny. Do any of you think this is a good idea. Does anyone have a better suggestion of a diesel engine to use. What would be a good price to pay for the engine. thanks jake

If I ever get time to, (yeah right) I'm planning on putting a 6CTA cummins in my 1996 Ford. I'm thinking about the over/under very seriously. A good easy to find transmission is a 3054A spicer. they were a 5spd with a very slow first gear and a 20% overdrive. they came on the back of the 478 hercules engines used in many of the 6x6 military trucks. Many people have put those engines in their whites and olivers and have those transmissions lying around. they used a divorce mounted transfer case and were not a huge heavy thing. they had a SAE bell housing and will bolt right on the back of the perkins. not sure about flywheel thickness/imput shaft length, haven't got that far. Nothing a big piece of steel and a evening in the lathe couldn't cure. As far a the O/U, I,m probably going to put it between the transmision and the transfer case and the engine, transmission, O/U, and transfer case will probably be all bolted in a subframe that is rubber mounted to the frame of the truck to keep everything in line. I'm not sure about if the driveshaft angles will be acceptable on a regular cab truck with the O/U, I'm using a crew cab.

Brad, I don't think the O/U anywhere behind the transmission is going to work. What will happen to the pump for the O/U when you put it in reverse to back up? Will it work in both directons or will it be running "dry"? I thought thats why on a tractor it was mounted to the engine, always turning the same way. oleblu

I thought of that same problem that is why I figured the O/U would have to go before the tranny. Also I did not know many RPM's the O/U had to run for the pump to work. It would be fairly easy to hook the O/U to the engine. But from the O/U to the tranny would be a little different. I still have not given up on the idea. I will do a little more research. BTW does anyone know the weight of the 354? ps. My first thoughts were to use a 329 deere engine with a hydrostat with no driveline. The hydro would just sit on the rear and I would have to come up with the correct gear combo for it have a good range of speed but my dad has talked me out of this because of safety issues. I just thought it would be really neat to be sitting at a stop light with the enginge running at about 2700rpm and easing into the hydro. I know I have a sick mind but hey I am only 20.

Brad, I can't take credit for being that smart. I have a friend who wanted to do the same thing, even bought the O/U unit, before he realized the pump problem. The unit sits on a shelf still banded to the pallet it came on. Good luck. oleblu

Putting the o/u on the back of the engine won't be that bad, it will just make the gearshifter for the tranny a bit more interesting.

Ten years ago you could get a kit to put a Perkins in your Ford pickup. I knew where there were two in this area. The vehicles engines use a different governor and like Larry said get rid of the Over Under.

Well if you add the perkins then leave the over/under off.You still will need the regular transmission and hooking the two is problem. If you really want to use the perkins get the correct parts to hook to the trans. At one time dodge trucks used this engine and you should be able to find the right parts. In trucks the engines speed was turned up to about 3000 and they often had high speed rears to get the road speed needed.
