I just bought an Oliver 550. It needs some work and I need some advice. The PTO engagement will not stay in gear. The PTO shaft turns only if you use excessive pressure and hold it back. It will not lock in as the owners manual says. Is this an adjustment problem or is this a sign that the PTO clutches are worn out? Also how can I tell if it is a 540 or a l000 RPM shaft? I do appreciate your responses and time to answer. Regards, Allen

Sounds like You're on the right track with adj.Your pto. I was curious how Your tractor is set up, and how You plan to use it?? I've never seen another 550,except the one I own. I bought it 20+yrs ago to help maintain Our place here in the redwood forest of the far northern coast of CA. It is far from the perfect tool for the job, but at the time is was all we could find and afford. If has a front end loader that works well, and I have hard mounted a "digmor 1001" backhoe on the back. The tractor is overmatched for about every job it has to do around here, but it refuses to die. I finially had to put a new ring & pinion last year, but I think that was only because the pinion was run HARD...and out of proper adj. until it broke. My biggest greef is that it doesn't have power steering. I've gotten spoiled recently from driving some other more modern backhoe's, but my little 550 don't own me a damm thing. Good luck. ~ron

For Ron, the tractor has a front end loader with two buckets with it. one 7 ft snow bucket and a 4 ft. dirt bucket. My plan is to use the loader for odd jobs around the place including moving fire wood which I have had to cut due to the hurricane. For all- I attempted to adjust the PTO. I found the spring button to push in and the slotted ring. It looks like it is screwed in as far as it will go. In trying to turn the adjustment it is tight as though it is as far as it will go. Where could I buy new clutch parts for the PTO? What can I expect to pay? In spliting the tractor, Is it a job that a novice could do? Again thanks to all who take time to respond. Allen

There is a plate with 4 bolts on bottom of transmission. About where foot plates are.
Inside is your PTO Clutch, has a notched adjustment nut. Roll PTO Clutch arround till you find Spring loaded pin in one of the notches. Depress pin & turn adjustment nut clockwise about 3 notches ( I use 2 flat blade screwdrivers) and see how lever works may need more??
Once you get it to click in and out next Question is will it hold??? If it will not hold under load you will have to split tractor & replace clutch disks.
It is 540 PTO on the 550
If you get into more than adjustments probably will need a Shop Manual. If I can help just let me know. I'm in the process of rebuilding a 550 Gas right now. So I have the tools & parts & shop manual strung all over the wife's garage.

When adjusting the PTO turn the adjusting ring clockwise till the lever snaps in place, should require 35# when properly adjusted. The RPM is 540 also there is a grease zerk under the right foot rest this lubs the brass release collar and should get grease every 5 hrs whem using the PTO.
