I am now the proud owner of an Olive 88, 1951 model, row crop. Never owned an Oliver before! I will have the manuals ordered tomorrow but want to do a few things to the tractor before the manuals get here. 1. It is 12v and has the ballist resistor in the system. Can I get a higher resistor coil and do away with the inline resistor? If so, what type of coil? 2. Does it use non-detergent oil and if so what weight? How much? 3. The same question goes for the rear end and hyd. fluids, what weight? 4. Do you have to use leaded fuel? 5. There is an electric pigtail coming from the top of the hyd. selector box. What is it for? 6. Where is the serial number located? Any help would be appreciated and thanks for the help in advance. I am looking forward to having it for a winter project.

evielboweviel gave good advice. I would go one better than his suggestion by removing the oil pan and valve cover and cleaning everything very well. You will find about a quart of sludge in the bottom of the pan and a handfull on top of the head. While in there, be sure to clean the screen over the oil pump pick up. Replace the pan and cover using either new gaskets or just clean the areas well and use a good grade of silicone. I personaly like Permatex Copper.

By doing this you remove most the dirt that the nondetergent oil has left behind. The new detergent oil will not pick this crud up and carry it through the engine to cause wear to all the bearing surfaces.

Then change the oil and filter as per evielboweviel's suggestion.

You can get rid of the reistor by buying a coil with a reistor built into it.This will reduce the conections and wires, and avoid any chance of mismatched coil and reistor. But the tractor will run fine the way it is.Just go to a parts place and say i want a 12 volt coil with built in reistor.

Mike, evilbowevil pretty much covered the bases of most of your questions. My input will be aimed towards the ele. pigtails on your hydraulic unit. Oliver had a unique system using electromagnets to move the depth stops on their cylinders. Simply put, you could adjust the depth stops on your equipment without leaving the seat of the tractor. The ones I used in the '60s worked great, most people I talk with today claim they didn't work so well. Unless you have a GOOD, WORKING Oliver Hydraelectric cylinder to go with your tractor's system, the plug ends are of no use to you. Your hydraulic system will work with any other cylinders just fine. Wiring harness for this system is not cheap. As for the serial number plate, it is on the RIGHT side of the transmisson near the brake drum. If you have any other questions, just ask. I, too, have a 1951 88RC.

any good grade of oil is better than what was avaible when tractor was manufactored
if you go with detergent oil and I think you should thenm change it at 5 hours and then at 10 hours. after that once a year or 100 hours
hydraulic use NAPA premium hytraulic oil, use NAPA 80/90 for the rear end
manuals will explain wires from hydraulic
unleaded is fine
this is what works for my 66 and 1650D
