The 2150's were normally very dependable. the biggest thing I see that can turn one into a parts tractor is the hydraulic idler gear bearings. they put a small tin pan right below it to keep gear oil from walking up the pto shaft and it did its job... it kept the oil away. the bearings go out and the shaft and gear go sideways and chew up the rear end housing and the other two drive gears. We have parted out several 2150's in the past because of this problem and repacing the rear end housing was a little more than the customer wanted to spend. My suggestion to any 2150 owner is to make sure the pan is removed and the bearings are replaced at the same time. I know it's hard to do this to a tractor that seems to have no problems, but this is a silent killer.

I havent heard of that one. Where is this pan located?? I have to rebuild the PTO in my 2150 this winter sometime and this sounds like a good time to check this problem.

Ya learn something new every day, guess I can go take a nap now.

Very nice rig, I have a 2150 MFWA Heavy duty version.

The main thing is to check the engine, make sure the big 478 Hurk is not putting out a lot of smoke from underneath. As these engines get older they start blowing by and slobbering out the blow by tube. The less smoke and oil from the tube the better. Almost all these engines leak oil at the filters, there are ways to fix that if that is a problem. There are also some other updates that could have been done, or can be depending on what you have on the engine, like changing the fuel filters, and fixing the leaky tach drive gear on the front cover. I can tell you more about these if you get it.

You also want to check out the front end good, problems here can be costly. Make sure the front wheels pull and run smoothly, no popping or noises from the front end. Check the seals and oil levels on the differentials and the transfer case.

Other than that just the normal stuff that you would look at on an Oliver, that it shift in all three ranges, breaks work, PTO, hydraulics, steering, etc.

You will really like the MFWA on these big tractors, they run really smooth through the field and they are a real brute of a tractor.

Shep,
thanks for the info. we were cautioned about the MFWA on our 1955 when we got it. thankfully that is okay - so far... knock on wood.
did you end up converting your 2150 to a cummins? looking back through the archives i saw that you were pondering it and that you have a natural propencity to use cummins :).
does yours have a dual PTO? did any or all of them i wonder? how are the fender tanks? never had em before. thanks again.

I got my 2150 with a busted turbo and blown head gaskets, but I fixed all that and ran the tractor for about a year with the Hurk. Then about a year ago it was running a silage blower and the water pump locked up and the engine locked up before we could get to it. So the engine was shot (it was kinda sick anyway so it wasnt a great loss). So last year we put a 5.9L Cummins in it and turned it to 210 Hp on the PTO and have been running all spring and fall pulling a 5 shank DMI coulter champ about 14 inches in our clay soil.

I think alll the 2050 and 2150 tractors had the duel PTO, mine does I know.

Fender tanks are great, I have two sets as you can tell from my last picture. One on the 2150 and the other set on the G-1355, both sets work great. Main think you have to remember is not to take the cap of the front tank or you will lose the vacume pull to get fuel out of the fenders. You probaby have to change the fuel filters a little more with fender tanks because of the huge surface area that the fuel comes in contact with.

Send us some pictures of your toys and of the 2150 you are looking at if you can. I always like seeing other peoples tractors.

Good luck

here is our 1955 MFWA. we bought this used with 4400 hrs on it and overhauled 310. turboed to 120 hp. this one and some of our others are listed under mapleman over at tractorpics.com. this at least is our beast, but hopefully it wont be for tooooo much longer.... :) boy i just love the way that she purrs like a happy kitten - his is our only 310, the 283s sound good but the 310 with turbo is the best.
thanks.

I have seen that tractor before, right after you got it I think. Didnt you go by Johnny or something else before??? You have a 1650 (I think) as well that you sent me pictures of. That is a real good looking 1955, Im sure you have been using it a bunch.

Did you get any pictures of the 2150 you are looking at?? What are they asking for it??

first, what hp did these thing come from the factory? BUT, and that is a BIG BUT(T)
brother just talked to the guy - engine has a leaking seal in the front - when worked hard all day it will take a quart of oil. i dont know what seal it is or where it is except that it is up front. how bad do you think that is? (i know, it all depends) :-) do these seals usually require pulling the motor to fix? while it does sound good, i am not ready to tackle throwing a 5.9 into this tractor... thanks
man, i am gonna have to take the time and go see it - i hate having to preemptively think these things through.

Probably the front seal. pull the radiator and you can get the pulley right off. If you know the right people, you can get herc parts very reasonable. stock I think was about 140. just overhauled one put 22.5:1 military piston in turned pump up made 225 hp. Not highly reccomended for field work like that.

It could be the front cover as Brad suggested, it also could be the gear drive for the Tach out there. I had trouble with that gear drive leaking, and then it actually cracked and really spewed oil. I solved the problem by capping it off and putting an electric tach on the tractor.

Like Brad said parts for that engine are everywhere, just a little pricy.

As long as the engine runs and sounds good you will probably be able to run it for a while, but when it gives up the Cummins option is a lot more feasible than overhauling the Hurk the way I figured it. My Hurk engine always had trouble with overheating when pulling it hard, even with a streight pipe on it, so be careful about that if you really get to working it.

Good luck

Shep,
actually, that was probably my brother jake. he and i "share" the tractors - he is the actual dairy farmer and i help him out when i am not doing my own crap. i jut love working with the right color green. yeah we have that 1650 - a pic of it is over at tractorpics. we also have a 1655 MFWA - thats the one we have been having trouble with how to do the power beyond and separate loader valve thing. i have an old pic of that one with the cab on, but we took that off this summer and have yet to put fenders on it. i hope to get pics of the 2150 soon. they are asking $7,500. my brother is supposed to go look at it today or tomorrow. oh yeah - the ad does actually say the hours - 4400. i wasnt sure before but i am now.
thanks, John
