Does anyone have any idea how many 1948 Oliver 88s were built with the 70 style grill? I have 2 that are a 1948 model with the old style grill.

The Alan King Data Book serial number listing says some old style (70 style) 88's were made in January 1948. Then they stopped and came out with the newer style later in 1948. I have other information that says the first run was from 4-10-47 thru 7-14-47. Then a second run from 12-26-47 to 1-26-48. My old style 88 would have been made in January 48. Hope this helps.

They only made a few of each configuration with the old style grill. The industial is the rarest of the old style 88. Off the top of my head there where about 250 industrials. 800 Row Crops and 600 some Standards. They are all considerd highly collectable. The side engine cover is the old 70 style also. I could find out for sure the exact numbers but it would take a little while. This was a test run and Oliver did not want to give away the new fleetline styling until they had all models ready for one big introduction. What configuration do you have? The model 80 was an Oliver tractor with no Hart Parr.

Are you sure you aren't talking about '47 88's. In the Olivers the tin work scemes are the Hart Parr, the streamliner's and the fleetlines. The 70 and 80 were Hart Parr's to start with, then they became streamliners in '39 I think. The '47 88's were streamliners. The rest of the 77's and 88's were fleetlines. Later.

No, the 88s I have are built with the late 70 Style Grille like the '47 model. I have a '47 model with that grille but the other 2 are '48 models. The one has 12 29 7 casted on the frame which is a date code used when casting that should signify as other casting numbers on the tractor do that the frame was casted 12-29-47. The frame has not been off and the serial tag is a '48 model. The engine has the frost plugs in it similar to the '47 model and the frame has only the holes for the '47 style grill/radiator shroud someone had drilled two new holes in it to mount the fleetline grill onto it. The two holes were drilled to line up with the front 2 holes under the radiator.

IN 1947 OLIVER DID AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL OF THE 88 IN THE OLD 70 STYLE. CHECK THE OLIVER HART -PAR BOOK BY C.H. WENDEL PAGE 212.
