Hi,
I need a tractor with a really slow 1st gear, 3pt hitch, diesel, wide front, 2WD, narrow tires (13.6" or less). I have an IH 574 but its geared for drag racing and is useless for transplanting vegetable seedlings.

I like the look of Olivers, there seem to be a lot of row crop tractors in that make. I recently saw an Oliver 1560 listed at $5900, said it had "6X2 transmission with Over and Under". any info on this model? How hard is it to get parts for Olivers?

Any suggestions on models to look at, or tractors for sale that might fit the bill?

Thanks!

Paul

I use a 550 gas with a 1 row transplanter and it works great, i have transplanted strawberries, melons, and tomatoes. If you get a diesel they have a little more horse power and you can usally find one for under 5000.

The 1650 model you mentioned is a very good model. Most Oliver guys say, including myself, that the 1650 is the best Oliver made. Its a very durable, midsized tractor, and for its size it can do about any job you want it to do. They make good yard tractors, and yet they are good tractors for planters and such. I'm sure others with post and boast on the 1650....:) I'd recommend that tractor very much, but for $5,900, it seems high for me. There are many out there for $4-5,000. Good luck!

Paul, I assume your using a mechanical transplanter. If it's a one row transplanter the 1650 may be too large, depending on row spacing. If it's a two row transplanter the 1650 will work fine. I think a Super 55, 550, or 1365 would be a better fit with a one row transplanter.

I agree with J Meyer. The 1650 is a fine tractor. However, I can't do any 1650 boasting since I don't have one..... ..yet.

I think the 1650 would be a little fast for transplanting. I have it's newer "sebling" a White 2 70 (grate tractor). The neighbor transplants cabbage and after watching how slow they go, (they use IH hydros) the 1650 in 1st under drive would be to fast to operate a transplanter unless you have very fast Help(:-).

Thanks for the info, guys. The 1650 I saw advertised said it had a "6X2 trans w/Over and Under" which I assumed meant a creeper, will call. I plant my veg in a bed system, 5 foot beds center to center on wheeltracks. I need to keep tire width below 13.6", and 12 or narrower works even better. I plant 1, 2, or 3 rows (60", 30", or 15" rows) per bed depending on crop, I grow everything from salad mix to watermelons.
