I just committed to buy an Oliver 550 gas with a loader. I understand the gas is about 46 Hp. I also am told the 550 has weak spindles. What should I be aware of in working this tractor with a loader. Just tell me anything about the 550 gas and it will help me in the new world of Oliver. Thanks for your time. allen

I've run my old 550 with a loader on and off for the last 20 years, almost always on very uneven ground, and my manual steering is always a problem.( Ive rebuilt the steering box 3 times) Maybe before You put Your money down, try driving around with a heavily loaded bucket. It takes a lot of muscle, patients, and differential braking. I'm always looking for a reasonable way to add power steering, but otherwise it has been a good machine. I adapted a 3pt.digmar backhoe. I read the other responses and agree exactly. ~ron

If it has the non-adjustable front axle they had alot heavier spindles and were less prone to breaking. Unfortunately, this is probably unlikely. The steering boxes were not any stronger than they needed to be. If it has power steering with the external clinders on each side you should be fine, otherwise be easy on the steering, they can be trouble.

If it has had a loader on it ? Check front Axel Pivot Pin. If it is wore it will put pressure on Stableizer bars front & back. It will work OK if you don't put front end in a bind on real uneven ground. Get a owners manual or aleast get a copy of Service Chart & use it. They will last for ever if taken care of.
It is 42 HP & if you have Questions about your 550 or repairs just ask & some one will try & help.
