I am looking at purchasing a Super 55 but sometimes the gears grind and I am unable to shift with the clutch pedal fully depressed. I am no mechanic and am wondering what could cause this and about how much in parts it would cost to fix.

From the sounds of it, It could be as simple as a clutch adjustment. how far do you have to push the pedal down before you can feel the clutch?

Thanks for your help Brad. I decided to buy the tractor before I read you post. I picked it up for 2000 and it came with a loader, 6' bush hog, scraper and a new set of pistons and sleeves. The tires are good and the engine runs strong. The only problems I have noticed so far is a pretty good leak from the gear box coming through at the inspection plate which makes it difficult to keep the transmission fluid full and I am unable to shift into the high gears. Everything else seems to be working well. I figured there was probably a seal that was bad and I was wondering how difficult it would be to change.

To fix the belly leaks on the 550's you have to split the tractor but after you do enough of them it can be done in about 15 minutes. split it between the upper and lower half of the center section leaving the steering and dash with the front of the tractor. remove the stabalizers at the back with the three bolts holding the tin cups on.take the two 5/8 bolts out of each side of the frame and there are several 3/8 bolts that need to be removed. put a floor jack under each end and roll it apart. it is easiest to replace all the seals, gaskets and o-rings while you have it apart. make sure you have a manual for this one as there are Quite a few places where detailed pictures are very helpful.
