Oliver 1800 Oil Pressure

I was wondering if you folks could answer a question for me? We have an 1800 gas motor and have always had a problem with low oil pressure when it gets up to temperature. I am in the process of replacing bearings, sleeves, pistons etc, and I am surprised at how good the old bearings and the oil pump look, I had thought that they might be cause of my oil pressure problem, but I am not sure now. In looking at the parts book, it appears that there should be a ball and spring (relief valve?) under the plugs on the oil filter adapter. However, our engine just has the plugs, no ball or spring, an Agco parts person said that our engine shouldn't have them. Is it possible they should be there, would it help oil pressure to have them? Any other suggestions?

For future reference... before you tear down an engine with oil pressure problems have a mechanic use his pressure luber (some say pre-luber) to verify where the problem lies. It's just a tank full of oil and compressed air with a gauge on it. You plug it into an oil gallery tap near the front of the engine and open the valve (engine off). If the pressure is low, it has to be the bearings, if OK, it has to be something else, usually the oil pump.

If your engine has two oil filter bases and the 1 3/4 wide thrust bearing it is an "A" engine and usually these have spin on oil filters. any of the spin on filters have a internal bypass in them and the base only has pipe plugs in it. if it has the "sock" type oil filter it should have a filter bypass valve in the base. The biggest killer of oil pressure on the 7 main waukesha engines is usually excessive flow past the bearings and the fact that the oil pump design and capacity is marginal at best. Make sure you have a good shop check the linebore in the block, and then as with any major overhaul have the reground. If your engine has the offset connecting rod caps, make sure you install the new 12 point rod bolts and washers. Regardless, have the new style one piece wristpin bushings installed.

This engine has a single sock type filter, the 1-1/2" wide thrust bearing and straight cut rods. Should I give Tom a call?
