Just putting the rear main seal in my Continental engine and useing the new rope seals and gaskets that came in the overhaul set. This new pan gasket is thicker than the one i took off and instead of stopping under the seal housing it keeps going all the way to the crank shaft following the seal holder all the way.should i leave it like this or do i trim it someplace ? As it is now it seperates the rope seal but it looks like it belongs there and looks like it would keep the oil in.The old seal looks like cork and was dried out so bad i cant see how it would have ever keep the oil in.Any help will really be appreciated, thanks.Dave

I have a 5gear HP 70 in the shop now, the crank seal is the new rope style, I trimed it so it a little longer than the chanel it fits in, the ends stick up about 1/8 in. hope I did it right, have a way to go as the engine was in a basket and needs a lot of cleaning. The last engine I did had the cork seal. Hope this helps. Delbert
