What is the best way to test gauges while on tractor? How to tell if the trouble is in the sender or the gauge?

On electric gauges removing the wire to the sending unit and checking the gauge by either grounding the wire or leaving it open is the easiest. If grounding or having the wire unhooked causes the gauge to react, then the problem is the sending unit. No reaction, then wiring or gauge is the problem. What gauges on what tractor are you having trouble with? WB.

Sorry I took so long to get back but was gone for 10 days. The tractor is an 1850 and guages that don't work are amp, temp, fuel. Mostly I was iterested in how to check sending units and guages in general, Many thanks for your time

My experience is that gauges rarely fail. Replace the sending unit first after verifying the wire (for electrical gauges) or tube (for mechanical gauges) is intact.
